Gemini’s Mobile Surge in Indonesia, Nearly 9 Million AI Images a Day

Indonesia is emerging as one of Gemini’s most active markets in Southeast Asia, driven by a sharp shift toward mobile-first AI use. Google says people in the country are now generating nearly 9 million images every day through the Nano Banana feature.

The scale is notable because it shows how quickly AI use has moved beyond text prompts. On Indonesian devices, 82 percent of Gemini prompts come from mobile, and half of those already involve voice or images instead of plain text.

Mobile behavior is shaping Gemini’s growth

Google describes Gemini as the most searched AI assistant in Indonesia, with similar interest also visible in Thailand and Vietnam. The pattern reflects a wider regional trend in which users increasingly turn to AI through their phones rather than desktop devices.

That mobile dependence fits into broader everyday habits across the region. Google notes that gaming, short video viewing, and shopping have long been centered on smartphones in Southeast Asia, and AI is now following the same path.

Gemini’s user base is expanding fast

Sapna Chadha, Google’s Vice President for Southeast Asia, said daily Gemini usage has grown rapidly in recent years. She added that the Gemini app now serves more than 900 million users across 230 countries and 70 languages.

In Southeast Asia, the number of active Gemini app users has more than doubled over the past 12 months. Google says that pace is the fastest growth of any Google app it has launched in the region.

Chadha said Gemini is being used for a wide range of tasks, from helping with schoolwork to building marketing strategies. She also said the app is increasingly useful for people who rely on AI while on the move.

“Nearly three in four requests on Gemini across this region come from mobile devices. This truly reflects the broader consumer landscape in Southeast Asia,” Chadha said.

The data suggests that AI adoption in Indonesia is no longer limited to text-based use cases. Instead, it is becoming a visual and voice-driven habit, with smartphones acting as the main gateway.

For Indonesia, the headline number is not only the volume of AI images, but the behavior behind it. Gemini is increasingly being used as a mobile companion for daily tasks, and that may be the clearest sign of how AI habits are changing in the region.
