Roblox is preparing to let users begin creating games on a phone by typing an idea into an AI tool. The feature, called Build, is designed to turn a text prompt into a basic game project without requiring coding knowledge at the start.
The initial rollout will be limited by location, age, and safety checks. Build enters its alpha phase in New Zealand from July 28 and will initially be available to verified users aged at least 9.
Publishing Still Requires Moderation
Creating a project through Build does not mean it can immediately be released to the public. Games made with the tool must pass Roblox safety moderation before they can be published.
Once approved, those games can be played globally by users aged 16 and over. The different age conditions separate access to the creation tool from access to games produced through it.
| Stage | Availability | Age Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Build alpha | From July 28 in New Zealand | At least 9 and age verified |
| Games made with Build | Global play after moderation | Users aged 16 and over |
Roblox plans to expand Build to more countries in the coming months, according to Medcom.id. The company is also preparing a free version for all creators and a paid option for users who need more extensive capabilities.
From a Short Idea to a Starting World
A creator could enter a request for a relaxed forest adventure game with environmental obstacles. Build is intended to generate early components such as the game environment, characters, gameplay mechanics, and visual style.
The output is not positioned as a finished game that cannot be changed. Creators can test the project, share it with friends, and continue development in Roblox Studio when they need a more complete set of tools.
Roblox supports Build with a combination of open-source AI models and its own AI models. Those models were trained using specialized data related to game worlds and three-dimensional assets.
The system is intended to do more than generate individual 3D objects. It is also designed to form playable environments that can be used directly as part of a game.
AI Across the Development Process
Build is part of a wider AI effort across the Roblox ecosystem. Roblox is also developing AI features in Roblox Studio to assist creators throughout the game development process.
One planned capability is automated playtesting to identify bugs before players use a game. Another is AI analytics that can answer questions about game performance in everyday language.
The company is also preparing AI recommendations for experiments intended to improve engagement, player retention, and monetization. This places AI alongside creators during development, testing, and performance evaluation rather than only at the creation stage.
Roblox has continued work on generative AI for 3D assets following the launch of Procedural Models and the AI Cube model. Those technologies can help create game objects from text or images.
A new model is also being prepared to generate a complete 3D scene from a single prompt. Even with faster starting tools, Roblox says game recommendations will continue to depend on strong player retention and engagement.
