A $8 Used SSD Brings Back the Physical Ritual of Choosing Steam Games

A used 128 GB SATA SSD can become more than discarded storage when placed inside a custom 3D-printed shell. A Reddit user known as Jibril-sama turned the drives into physical cartridges that open selected game pages in Steam.

The project restores a small ritual that digital PC libraries have largely removed: choosing a game from a shelf. Each cartridge carries a game-cover label, giving a familiar physical presence to titles that remain digitally licensed.

A Physical Shortcut to a Digital Library

The cartridge is inserted into an external SATA dock connected to a PC. Linux identifies the drive through its unique device identity and starts the automation process.

Jibril-sama uses udev rules and a systemd daemon to run a script after the SSD is detected. That script uses the Steam URL Protocol to launch Steam directly to the appropriate game page.

The result is not a replacement for Steam’s library management system. Instead, it offers a physical trigger that removes the need to manually search through a large list of owned games.

Mediaindonesia.com reported that Jibril-sama obtained the used SSDs for around $8 each. The modest per-unit cost makes old small-capacity drives suitable candidates for a personalized collection project.

The SSDs can also hold game installations separately, allowing one cartridge to represent a specific title and its dedicated storage. This approach is especially suited to favorite single-player games that do not require frequent large updates.

For players with entirely digital libraries, the appeal lies in turning an invisible catalog into objects that can be arranged, displayed, and selected by hand. The project links a modern PC setup with the tactile habits associated with older console media.

Large Updates Remain a Challenge

The 128 GB capacity and write endurance of older drives create practical limits. Live-service games that receive updates reaching tens of gigabytes may be difficult to manage on these cartridges.

The total cost can also rise as the number of represented games increases. A large Steam library would require many individual drives as well as physical shelf space to store them.

Those limitations make the idea more appropriate for a curated group of games rather than every title a player owns. It is a collectible interface for selected favorites, not a universal storage solution.

Steam Remains at the Center

The physical cartridge does not alter game licenses or move services outside the Steam ecosystem. It simply directs the user to a particular Steam game page after the SSD is connected.

By combining discarded hardware with Linux automation, Jibril-sama’s project shows how an old SSD can gain a practical and decorative second life. The device becomes a bridge between digital distribution and the experience of picking a game from a physical collection.
