Archer Aviation is expanding beyond the electric air-taxi market with a new autonomous attack rotorcraft called Thunder. Developed with Anduril Industries, the defense variant is scheduled to make its first flight in 2027.
The project highlights a shift for electric vertical takeoff and landing developers as the urban air-mobility market faces difficult execution challenges. Certification delays, infrastructure requirements, and substantial capital needs have pushed companies to explore other applications for their technology.
A Platform for Commercial and Defense Use
Thunder originates from an autonomous aircraft platform jointly developed by Archer and Anduril for both commercial and defense markets. Anduril introduced the military version under the Thunder name at the Farnborough Airshow in the United Kingdom.
The companies began their collaboration under an agreement signed in 2024. Archer is also preparing a commercial variant of the platform, with its first commercial customer due to be announced over the weekend.

Built for Armed Operations
Anduril classifies Thunder as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft. It is intended to perform attack missions as part of operations connected with crewed aircraft.
The aircraft is aimed at operators of attack helicopters and armed reconnaissance helicopters. Shane Arnott, Senior Vice President of Programs & Engineering at Anduril Industries, said the prospective user base includes Apache operators and operators of armed reconnaissance helicopters.
Its role is therefore distinct from the passenger-focused mission normally associated with electric air taxis. Thunder is being positioned for more demanding operational requirements in the defense sector.
Not a Conversion of an Existing Aircraft
Archer Chief Executive Adam Goldstein said the company is not simply adapting an aircraft that already exists. He said the aircraft is being built specifically around requirements identified by Anduril.
“Anduril has done a very good job identifying the need and building early before the program was announced,” Goldstein said, according to Reuters. He added that Archer is building an aircraft that is highly specific to that requirement.
Goldstein also said that a product intended for broad defense use must be designed for particular customers and use cases. That approach separates the program from an effort to turn a commercial aircraft into a military platform after the fact.
Defense as a New Route for eVTOL Developers
Archer is best known as a United States startup developing electric air taxis. Urban air-taxi services had previously been projected as a market worth as much as US$1 trillion, but the path to deployment remains complex.
Defense and heavier commercial applications are consequently becoming more important to Archer’s strategy. CNBC Indonesia reported that the partnership gives the company access to a defense segment with more demanding operating needs while it continues to pursue the commercial version.
The 2027 first flight will be a significant milestone for Thunder and the Archer-Anduril partnership. Attention will then turn to whether the platform can meet the needs of attack-helicopter and armed-reconnaissance operators.
