From Rural Coverage to 5G Capacity, XLSMART’s New Spectrum Faces a Major Test

XLSMART has secured two spectrum bands that are intended to address two persistent connectivity problems in Indonesia: weak coverage in difficult areas and heavy data traffic in major cities. The company won the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum selection in 2026.

The allocation gives XLSMART the opportunity to expand network reach while increasing data capacity where demand is most concentrated. Its real value, however, will depend on how quickly the new spectrum is converted into reliable network infrastructure.

A Different Role for Each Band

The 700 MHz band is designed for broad coverage and stronger signal penetration into buildings. These characteristics can make network expansion more efficient in rural areas and locations with challenging geography.

The 2.6 GHz band serves a different purpose because it offers wide bandwidth for high volumes of data traffic. XLSMART is positioning it to strengthen 5G capacity in dense urban areas and support services that require lower latency.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital named PT XLSMART Telecom Sejahtera Tbk as the winner of the selection for both bands. XLSMART was formed through the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren.

Merger Synergy Moves to the Network

The new allocation arrives at a critical point for the company’s post-merger network integration. Bringing together the former XL Axiata and Smartfren networks can be accelerated with additional spectrum resources.

According to Suara.com, the allocation is not simply an addition to the company’s spectrum assets. It also provides more room to manage traffic efficiently while maintaining the user experience.

XLSMART President Director and CEO Rajeev Sethi said the spectrum would be translated into network development for communities and institutions across Indonesia. He said the company intends to meet the development obligations set through the selection process on time.

“This trust is a major mandate for XLSmart. We will use the new spectrum allocation to deliver a network that is broader, more reliable, and higher in quality so that communities, businesses, schools, and public services throughout Indonesia can enjoy a better digital experience,” Rajeev Sethi said in an official statement on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

What Users May Gain

For remote communities, the 700 MHz Spectrum could help reach areas affected by terrain challenges and signal blind spots. More even connectivity could also provide small businesses with the technical foundation to access broader markets.

For urban users, the 2.6 GHz Spectrum is expected to ease pressure from growing traffic demand. The company also links the band to the development of 5G, the Internet of Things, smart cities, and industrial automation.

The broader test for XLSMART will be whether these plans result in a connection that remains dependable when people need it most. Full signal bars alone will not be enough if access is unstable during work, learning, business activity, or public service use.
