Age Checks Tighten On Gaming Platforms, Parents Gain Greater Control Over Under-16 Safety

Online gaming platforms in Indonesia are tightening account controls for users under 16, with age verification now placed at the center of access and safety rules. The new approach gives parents a larger role in deciding what children and teenagers can see, play, and use inside gaming services.

The policy uses age-based account settings to separate younger users into two groups, so platform access can be matched more closely to developmental needs. It also limits communication and content exposure more aggressively when an account has not gone through verification.

Two age groups, two levels of access

Young users are divided into children aged 5 to 12 and teenagers aged 13 to 15. Each group must pass technology-based age verification before the account can unlock the features allowed for its category.

For child accounts, the restrictions are the strictest. Only games with light content are accessible, while direct chat functions are fully disabled.

The interface for child accounts is also designed differently so it is easier to recognize during supervision. That setup is intended to help parents monitor activity more closely and reduce the risk of inappropriate interaction.

Teen accounts still face limits

Teen accounts receive more flexibility than child accounts, but they are not open in full. Users in this group can still play moderate-content games, yet their activity remains under system and parental oversight.

Communication is also restricted on teen accounts. Interaction is only allowed with other users who have been approved by a parent or guardian, keeping family control as part of the protection model.

A company representative said the policy is meant to keep the gaming experience aligned with age. “The new settings are intended to help parents make sure children have a safe and appropriate experience,” the representative said during a media briefing in Jakarta.

No verification means the strictest setting

Accounts that have not completed age verification face the toughest restrictions. In that case, communication is turned off entirely, and only the lightest content remains available.

This makes age verification the main gatekeeper for access. Without it, the platform chooses the safest route so the risk of unwanted content exposure or interaction is reduced from the start.

Built around local conditions

The policy has also been adapted for Indonesia’s local context. Those adjustments are meant to keep the system relevant to local needs, including age ranges that differ from global standards.

The system is dynamic and follows the user’s age as it changes. A child account will shift into a teen account at a certain age, then move again into a standard account after passing the defined age threshold.

With these changes, parents hold a more decisive role in shaping how children use gaming platforms. They can determine how much content children may access and how far interaction is allowed inside the platform.

The result is a more clearly defined safety structure for young players, with age verification, content limits, and family oversight working together to reduce exposure to material that may not be suitable for under-16 users.
