Microsoft 365 Copilot Shifts Into Action Mode, Handling Tasks Inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Microsoft is pushing Copilot in Microsoft 365 into a more active role, shifting it from a simple question-answering tool into an assistant that can carry out tasks inside apps. That change means users are no longer limited to chatting with Copilot on the side panel, because the system can now help complete work directly in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The move reflects a broader change in how AI is being used in the workplace. Instead of only replying to prompts, Copilot is now positioned to act with a clear goal in mind, using the tools available inside Microsoft 365 to finish the steps needed for a task.

Copilot now acts by default

Microsoft says Copilot is becoming “agentic” by default, which means it can execute tasks within Microsoft apps without relying only on a conversational mode. Users can describe the outcome they want, and Copilot will work through the available actions needed to get there.

This is a notable shift in function. Copilot is moving away from being viewed mainly as a chatbot and closer to a work partner that can assist with document creation, data handling, and presentation building.

Early results point to stronger use in core apps

Microsoft has shared initial figures suggesting the new approach is already resonating with users. The company reported higher engagement, better new-user retention, and stronger satisfaction across several key Microsoft 365 apps.

Word saw weekly usage per user rise by 52%. New-user retention also increased by 11%, while thumbs-up ratings, used as a satisfaction signal, improved by 21%.

Excel showed the biggest gains among the apps mentioned. Engagement rose by 67%, new-user retention increased by 50%, and satisfaction jumped by 65%.

PowerPoint also recorded growth, though at a more modest pace. Engagement went up by 11%, new-user retention climbed by 36%, and satisfaction rose by 25%.

Those numbers suggest that Copilot’s agent-style approach is beginning to fit the needs of everyday office work, especially where repetitive tasks often consume time.

Excel stands out as the clearest use case

Excel is often the app where many users face the steepest learning curve. Building formulas, organizing data, and setting up functions can be difficult for people who do not work with such structures every day.

Copilot’s ability to operate directly inside Excel could reduce much of that friction. The source material notes that the feature is still being developed, but the intended direction is clear, including support for creating Excel functions without needing to build everything from scratch.

That matters because the value is not only about speed. It also allows users to focus more on the result they want, while repetitive technical steps are handled by AI within the app itself.

No special mode needs to be turned on

One of the most important parts of this change is that Microsoft does not require users to enable a special mode or adjust extra settings. Copilot begins working as an agent by default, which lowers the barrier to use.

The rollout is starting for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Premium, Personal, and Family customers. Microsoft appears to be aiming for agentic behavior to become the standard experience, rather than an advanced feature that users have to find and activate manually.

That approach may help adoption, since many AI tools remain underused when they are hidden behind extra steps or complicated setup menus.

Microsoft’s direction is becoming clearer

Microsoft has not presented this capability as a finished endpoint. The company indicates that Copilot’s new behavior is still under development, even as the overall direction becomes more defined.

The focus is on making Copilot a more active assistant inside Microsoft 365, one that can help complete work rather than only discuss it. In a crowded AI market, Microsoft is leaning on practical value inside familiar productivity apps to set Copilot apart in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
