Rocky e-Smart Hybrid Brings Motorcycle-Like Fuel Savings to the Compact SUV Class

Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid stands out in the compact SUV segment because it tries to balance everyday responsiveness with fuel efficiency that is unusually strong for its class. The model has drawn attention for a fuel consumption claim that approaches the kind of thrift usually associated with a scooter, while still presenting itself as a practical family vehicle.

That positioning is tied to its serial hybrid system, which works differently from conventional gasoline-powered SUVs. In this setup, the wheels are driven entirely by an electric motor, while the gasoline engine functions as a generator to recharge the battery.

A hybrid setup built around electric drive

This approach gives the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid a driving character that is not the same as a typical hybrid. Because the electric motor handles the main propulsion, acceleration response arrives more quickly when the pedal is pressed.

Daihatsu describes the system as a strong hybrid, a label used to emphasize that the car is designed not only for fuel saving but also for a more lively daily driving feel. That balance is one of the main reasons the model attracts attention in the compact SUV category.

The technical package includes a 1,200 cc WA-VEX gasoline engine, a 177.6-volt hybrid battery, and a special Hybrid Transaxle. Daihatsu also states that the battery capacity reaches 0.74 kWh, which it says is six times larger than other vehicles in its class and comparable to medium SUV hybrids currently on the market.

Fuel consumption becomes the headline figure

The strongest talking point for the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid remains its claimed fuel economy. Daihatsu says the SUV can record 34.8 km per liter based on the JC08, or Japan Cycle 08, testing method.

In the company’s presentation, all media participants reportedly achieved fuel consumption figures above 30 km per liter. One of the recorded results even reached 47.8 km per liter, a number that immediately became the most eye-catching claim surrounding the car.

That level of efficiency gives the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid a strong marketing edge in a segment where operating costs matter. For buyers who want a daily vehicle with lower fuel spending, the comparison with a scooter’s economy becomes part of the appeal.

Performance is not sacrificed

Despite the efficiency-first positioning, Daihatsu still puts emphasis on usable performance. The electric motor in the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid is claimed to deliver a maximum output of 106 PS or 105 hp and peak torque of 170 Nm.

Daihatsu says that torque figure is the highest in its class. The instant nature of electric motor delivery also helps the SUV feel more direct from the start, which is useful in traffic and other urban driving situations.

The model is claimed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. That figure suggests the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid is not built solely for economy, but also for a level of responsiveness that supports daily mobility.

Lower emissions and a clearer environmental message

Beyond fuel savings, the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid is also presented as a lower-emission vehicle. Daihatsu lists CO2 emissions at 83 grams per km, using that figure as part of the model’s identity.

This data supports the company’s direction toward carbon-neutral mobility in Indonesia. For consumers who now consider environmental impact alongside design and features, the combination of strong efficiency and lower emissions adds another layer of relevance.

The model’s electric-driven character, paired with reduced emissions, also separates it from conventional gasoline SUVs. That distinction matters in a market where electrified vehicles are gradually becoming a more familiar choice.

Price and ownership support

Daihatsu offers the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid at Rp 299.850.000 on the road Jakarta. The SUV is available in three color options: Black Mica Metallic, Shining Pearl White, and Laser Blue Crystal Shine.

Ownership support is also part of the package. Daihatsu provides an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty for the hybrid battery, while the vehicle itself carries a 3-year or 100,000 km warranty.

In addition, buyers receive five free service labor sessions up to 50,000 km. Daihatsu also says all of its authorized workshops are prepared to handle maintenance and technical support throughout the ownership period, which is important for customers entering the hybrid segment for the first time.

With its serial hybrid system, strong fuel-efficiency claims, low-emission positioning, and clear after-sales support, the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid is aimed at buyers who want a compact SUV that keeps operating costs low without giving up a responsive driving feel.
