Apple’s next Pro Max model is already drawing attention for a reason that goes beyond the usual yearly refresh. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is being linked to a thicker body, and that extra bulk is said to make room for a much larger battery.
That trade-off could matter more than a slimmer design for many buyers. At the same time, the iPhone 18 Pro series is rumored to bring changes to the front display, camera hardware, and chip efficiency that may make the lineup feel more substantial than a routine upgrade.
A different design direction for the front
The biggest visual change is expected to happen on the front of the device. Apple is reportedly developing under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro series, a move that could remove the Dynamic Island seen on recent iPhones.
If that happens, the front camera may shift to a small punch-hole cutout on the upper-left side of the screen. That would leave the display looking cleaner and less interrupted, although another rumor suggests the Dynamic Island may not disappear entirely and could only become smaller.
Screen sizes are said to remain familiar. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to keep a 6.3-inch panel, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is projected to stay at 6.9 inches.
Camera upgrades without changing the triple-lens layout
On the back, Apple is still expected to keep the triple-camera setup. The larger shift appears to be in the hardware behind those lenses rather than in the number of cameras themselves.
One of the most discussed additions is a mechanical iris on at least one rear camera. That system would adjust the aperture to control how much light enters the lens, which could improve low-light shots, portrait photos, and background separation while reducing reliance on software processing.
There are also reports of a stacked three-layer image sensor, possibly supplied by Samsung. That sensor is said to improve capture speed, reduce noise, and strengthen dynamic range in both photos and video.
In addition, Apple is said to be preparing wider apertures for the main and telephoto cameras. If those details prove accurate, the camera system could become more capable without a dramatic change to the overall rear design.
A20 Pro is tied to efficiency gains
Performance changes are expected to center on the A20 Pro chip for both Pro models. The processor is said to use TSMC’s 2nm process, which is widely seen as an important step forward for both efficiency and performance.
Apple is also rumored to be working on a new packaging approach that places RAM closer to, or tightly integrated with, the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. That layout could help with speed, power efficiency, and thermal control.
Some leaks point to performance gains of around 15 percent. Power efficiency is also said to improve by as much as 30 percent compared with the previous generation, which would help on-device Apple Intelligence features as well.
Why the Pro Max may grow thicker
The most striking rumor around the iPhone 18 Pro Max is still the battery story. Apple is said to be willing to make the device slightly thicker in exchange for a larger battery.
That battery capacity is reportedly 5,100mAh, which would place it among the largest ever seen in an iPhone. The added capacity may push the weight beyond 240 grams, making the iPhone 18 Pro Max the heaviest iPhone so far.
For some users, the extra mass may be easier to accept if battery life improves significantly. That possibility becomes more interesting if the A20 Pro does deliver the efficiency gains being discussed.
Colors, timing, and pricing remain open
Apple is also said to be testing new Pro color options, including deep purple, burgundy, and coffee brown. A new glass back material and updated frame finish may also be part of the visual refresh.
The expected launch window still follows Apple’s usual pattern, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max likely to arrive in September 2026. Some reports also suggest the standard iPhone 18 could arrive later, possibly in 2027, though that has not been confirmed.
Pricing remains uncertain for now. After Apple raised prices on the iPhone 17 line, there is a chance the next generation may stay at similar levels, with the iPhone 17 Pro starting at Rs 1,34,900 in India and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at Rs 1,49,900.
