Pixel’s May Update Misses The Battery Drain Problem, Users Still Await A Real Fix

Google’s May Pixel update has arrived for Android 16 devices, but it has not yet delivered the fix many users were waiting for. The battery drain complaints that have circulated since March remain unresolved, even as the new patch rolls out with a different set of improvements.

That leaves many Pixel owners in the same position as before: waiting for a software update that directly addresses battery life rather than side issues. Reports of fast battery loss have come from more than one generation of Pixel, including the Pixel 7 and older models, and the problem has continued even during normal use.

What the May update actually changes

Google is distributing the Pixel update for May in stages over the next few weeks. Availability depends on the device model and the carrier, so not every Pixel will receive it at the same time.

The patch focuses on bug fixes and stability improvements. One of the more notable fixes addresses a camera issue that could freeze while recording video and adjusting zoom levels at the same time.

Google also corrected a display problem that could cause flickering, blur, or a frozen-looking screen. Those changes may improve day-to-day reliability, but they do not tackle the main battery complaint that has frustrated users for months.

Battery-related fix remains limited

There is a battery-related change in the May update, but it is narrow in scope. It addresses slower wireless charging when the battery level is around 75% to 80%.

That is a separate issue from the one Pixel owners have been flagging since March. The complaints center on battery life dropping too quickly after ordinary use, and users say the behavior has persisted even after trying basic troubleshooting steps.

Because of that, the update does not yet answer the concern that matters most to affected owners. The device may be more stable after the patch, but the broader battery drain issue remains untouched.

No clear timeline yet

Google has not said when a fix for the battery drain problem will be released. The issue has already been listed on the company’s official Issue Tracker for some time, which suggests it is being tracked, but not yet fully resolved.

For now, Pixel users are still waiting for a patch that addresses the real complaint. The May release improves a few areas in Android 16, but it stops short of solving the battery life problem that continues to draw the most attention.
