Qualcomm is pushing deeper into the affordable smartphone segment with two new chips that aim to make low-cost phones feel much faster, more capable, and more efficient. Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 are positioned to bring stronger performance, better graphics, and longer battery life to devices that many people still rely on as their main phones.
That matters because improvements in this price tier can be felt immediately in daily use. Faster app launches, smoother gaming, better 5G connectivity, and longer endurance are the kinds of changes that could make budget phones far more practical without moving them into flagship territory.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 targets everyday efficiency
Among the two, Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is Qualcomm’s main push for entry-level phones. It uses a 4nm process and an octa-core layout with two 2.4GHz performance cores and six 2.0GHz efficiency cores.
Qualcomm says this setup is meant to balance speed and power savings. The company also claims the GPU is 77% faster than the previous Snapdragon 4, with visuals that can reach up to 90fps.
More than just raw speed
The chip is also being pitched as a practical upgrade for battery life. Qualcomm says phones using Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 can gain an extra hour of video playback, more than one and a half hours of music playback, and another 35 minutes of voice calls on a single charge.
Several features usually associated with more expensive devices also make their way into this chip. Snapdragon Sound with Aqstic AptX Adaptive is included, along with Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI, which is said to reduce screen stutter by up to 25%.
Camera and dual-SIM support get attention
Qualcomm is also adding everyday-use features that may matter to budget buyers. Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 supports faster app launches, with Qualcomm claiming a 43% improvement, and it also supports dual SIM with 5G active on both cards at the same time.
For imaging, the chip adds support for auto-exposure, autofocus, and auto white balance. It also includes face detection and electronic image stabilization, or EIS, to help keep shots steadier.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 moves the focus to performance
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is aimed at a higher step in the lineup, with more emphasis on processing power and gaming. It uses four 2.6GHz performance cores and four 2.0GHz efficiency cores, making it better suited for phones that want to highlight stronger overall speed.
Qualcomm says its GPU is 21% faster than the previous Snapdragon 6 generation. The company also says power efficiency improves by 8%, so the gains are not limited to speed alone.
Gaming and battery life both get a boost
The company is placing gaming features at the center of Snapdragon 6 Gen 5. It comes with Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution for upscaling graphics, and Frames Per Second 3.0 tuning.
Qualcomm says the chip can also deliver at least two extra hours of music playback and nearly 40 additional minutes of gaming from one battery charge. That combination makes it more relevant for users who want a stronger midrange phone without sacrificing endurance.
Connectivity becomes a bigger selling point
One of the most notable changes is on the connectivity side. Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and BT Channel Sounding for item trackers.
Both chips also support 3GPP Release 17 and Snapdragon 5G modem technology, which Qualcomm says is a first for both series. On Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, support is extended with FDD Power Class 2 for uplink.
Qualcomm says that feature enables a dedicated upload band, which can make photo and data uploads 25% faster. It is another sign that features once associated with higher-end phones are moving into more affordable devices.
Phones with the new chips are expected later
Qualcomm says phones using Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will begin appearing in the second half of 2026. Brands listed for adoption include Honor, Oppo, Realme, and Redmi.
Those names matter because they are active in the affordable to midrange segment. If the chips perform as promised in commercial devices, the next wave of budget smartphones could feel significantly more capable without coming close to flagship pricing.
