PlayStation Store Nudges PS4 Owners Toward PS5, Fueling Fresh GTA 6 Buzz

Sony is increasingly treating Grand Theft Auto VI as more than just another high-profile release. On PlayStation Store, some users have reported seeing a message aimed at PS4 owners, urging them to buy a PS5 so they will be ready when the next Rockstar title arrives.

The timing of that push has drawn attention because excitement around GTA 6 remains intense. The console message specifically tells players to “Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.”

A direct push toward PS5

The notification has been seen by users who added GTA 6 to their wishlist, especially those who do not yet own a compatible console. That makes the message feel less like a routine storefront reminder and more like a clear upgrade nudge from Sony.

For many PS4 owners, the timing is sensitive. PS5 prices have already increased, so a delay in GTA 6 would make a new-console purchase feel even more difficult to justify.

Sony is already placing GTA 6 in a business context

The company’s interest in the game is not limited to storefront messaging. At its May 8 earnings call, GTA 6 was mentioned in Sony’s presentation and appeared on a slide alongside first-party PlayStation titles.

That placement reinforced the impression that Sony sees the game as a major lever for hardware demand. Some observers believe it signals that a more formal PS5-focused promotion for GTA 6 could start soon.

There is also speculation that pre-orders may be paired with a price announcement once the marketing push begins. Even so, no public confirmation has been given for those details.

Take-Two still sounds confident about November

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, remains publicly confident in the November launch window. In a conversation with Game File, he reiterated that the summer marketing campaign will begin “soon.”

Zelnick also reportedly appeared to acknowledge, in an interview with Bloomberg, that a PlayStation-specific promotion may be on the way. That would fit the growing sense that Sony and its partners are preparing to use GTA 6 as a major sales driver.

The game is not a PS5 exclusive, though, so the final promotional approach will still depend on Rockstar and Take-Two. Sony’s role is therefore important, but not fully controlling.

Why PS5 looks like the clearest path for players

The available platform options remain relatively limited for players who want to be ready at launch. Reports suggest Microsoft is struggling to manufacture enough new Xbox consoles because of a memory shortage, while PC players may have to wait until at least 2027.

There is still uncertainty around a potential Switch 2 port as well. In that environment, PS5 stands out as one of the most realistic ways for many players to access GTA 6 when it arrives.

That gives Sony a meaningful opportunity, especially if a PS5 bundle tied to the game becomes real. Sony has already projected slower hardware revenue because of rising component costs, so any wave of PS4-to-PS5 upgrades would matter.

If GTA 6 does not suffer a third delay, the overlap between the game’s appeal and Sony’s hardware strategy could become especially valuable. For now, the PlayStation Store notification looks less like a final guarantee and more like a sign that Sony is preparing for a moment it expects to be commercially important.
