Instagram users often want to open a DM without immediately triggering the “Seen” label. The app provides several ways to do that, allowing messages to be checked first without forcing a quick reply.
That flexibility matters because not every message needs an instant response. With the right settings, users can review incoming DMs while keeping more control over privacy and reducing the pressure to answer right away.
Restrict can create distance from specific accounts
One option is to use Instagram’s Restrict feature. It is designed to limit interactions from certain accounts, including through Direct Message.
When Restrict is active, messages from the restricted account do not appear in the main inbox. They move into the “Hidden Requests” folder in the “Message Requests” page, where they can be opened repeatedly without the “Seen” label appearing.
Restrict also prevents the restricted account from seeing the user’s Instagram active status. To turn it on, users can open their Profile, go to the Menu through the three-line icon in the top right, choose “Restrict interactions,” select what should be restricted and who should be restricted, then activate the feature.
This method is useful for users who want to keep some distance from a particular account without opening the conversation directly.
Read receipts can be turned off for broader privacy
Another approach is disabling read receipts. This setting keeps senders from knowing whether a message has been opened, making DM privacy easier to manage.
The option can be applied to a specific message or to all messages. For a single chat, users can open the direct message, select the conversation, tap the username, enter the Privacy & Security menu, and turn off the read receipt setting.
To disable read receipts for all messages, the process starts from the Profile page. After opening the Menu, users need to scroll to the section “How others can interact with you,” choose “Messages and story replies,” then tap “Show read receipts” and switch it off.
This gives users wider control when they want to read a message first and decide later whether it needs a reply.
Airplane mode remains a quick option without app settings
A third trick does not rely on Instagram’s built-in features. When all wireless connections are turned off, a message can be opened without leaving a digital trace on the received DM.
The user only needs to activate airplane mode on the phone, open Instagram, and read the message fully. After that, Instagram must be closed and confirmed not to run in the background before airplane mode is turned off again.
This method is useful for reading a message calmly without immediately triggering a read indicator. While the connection is off, Instagram message notifications also stop interrupting attention, which can help users focus more easily.
Each method serves a different need. Restrict fits users who want to manage a specific account, read receipts help with general DM privacy, and airplane mode works as a fast way to read messages without leaving a visible mark.
