A major horror crossover is now live for Phasmophobia players, and it does more than simply add a themed bonus. Phasmophobia by Alan Wake brings the atmosphere of Alan Wake 2 into Kinetic Games’ co-op ghost-hunting game, changing how familiar locations feel without asking players to pay extra.
The event is available at no additional cost for players on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, as long as they own Phasmophobia. It began on 12 May and will run until 2 June, making it a limited-time collaboration with a short window for players to experience it.
A crossover built around atmosphere
This partnership was developed together with Remedy Entertainment and written by Sam Lake, the creative director behind Alan Wake 2. The story was designed to fit both games’ lore, so the collaboration feels connected to the world of each title rather than like a simple promotional add-on.
In the setup, Alan Wake remains trapped in the Dark Place and writes a new manuscript. That story then pulls the paranormal investigators of Phasmophobia into its events, with the Dark Place influencing the game’s haunted maps.
The result is a shift in lighting, sound, and environmental detail across the investigation spaces. Players familiar with Phasmophobia’s locations will see them presented in a darker form, with the atmosphere of the crossover changing the mood of each hunt.
Why the collaboration fits both games
Kinetic Games CEO Daniel Knight said the partnership came together naturally. He pointed to the way both studios focus on tension and uncertainty instead of relying on jump scares.
Sam Lake also saw the pairing as a good match for two dark universes. Corey Dixon, art director at Kinetic Games, said Alan Wake 2 was chosen deliberately because it leans further into pure horror, which aligns with Phasmophobia’s psychological pressure.
That shared approach is part of what makes the event stand out. Rather than treating the crossover as a surface-level branding exercise, both teams shaped it around the mood and tension that define their games.
Limited-time event with exclusive rewards
Kinetic Games has made clear that this crossover is a one-time event. After 2 June, it will not return, and the exclusive cosmetic reward tied to the collaboration will not be available again.
There is also no confirmed follow-up collaboration with Remedy at this stage. Dixon said Kinetic Games would be open to another project if player response is positive, but nothing beyond this event has been announced.
For PC players, the crossover also carries an unusual distribution detail. Alan Wake 2 remains exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC, while the crossover assets appear in Phasmophobia through Steam.
A significant moment for Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia first entered Early Access in 2020 and has continued to grow since then. The game has now sold 28 million copies, including 23 million on Steam and 5 million on consoles, even though it has never left Early Access.
Kinetic Games is also preparing a full 1.0 launch later this year. Alongside that release, the studio is working on visual updates, map redesigns, and a film adaptation from Blumhouse.
For a small UK studio that began with a simple co-op horror concept, the current momentum is notable. With Phasmophobia by Alan Wake now active, the game has added another high-profile moment to its ongoing rise in the horror market.
