The iPhone 17 series may be selling strongly, but user complaints have not disappeared with the launch rush. What stands out most is that several of the problems are easy to notice in daily use, especially when it comes to how the device wears over time and how smoothly it runs.
That mix has kept attention on five issues in particular. Apple has already pushed out software fixes for some of them, yet users continue to report frustrations that are hard to ignore once the phone is in hand.
Durability concerns are the most visible
One of the earliest complaints came from owners showing that the iPhone 17 Pro could pick up marks on the back more easily than expected. The backlash was intense enough to earn the nickname “Scratchgate,” after videos showed the rear glass looking vulnerable and the back camera module appearing capable of denting along its edges.
Apple said some of the marks that looked like scratches were actually material transfer from a MagSafe stand. Even so, the camera damage seen after drops is real, and dents in the aluminum cannot be repaired.
The aluminum frame brought new trade-offs
The shift from titanium to aluminum on the Pro models made room for a different design, but it also introduced a downside. Aluminum frames can dent when the phone is dropped, even if the device is already protected by a case.
User photos and videos have shown cosmetic damage around the corners of the device. The display may stay intact, but a dented frame or a scratched camera plateau can still hurt the phone’s resale value.
Cosmic Orange has another complaint of its own
Some iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max owners in the Cosmic Orange finish have reported an unexpected color shift. Their anodized frames appear to change from orange to pink, which has drawn extra attention because the color is popular in several markets, including Asia.
The exact cause has not been confirmed, and there is no fix for devices already in users’ hands. Some speculation has pointed to long UV exposure or peroxide-based cleaning fluids, but there is no firm answer yet.
Battery and charging behavior has also drawn criticism
Not every battery complaint is unusual after a fresh installation or an iOS update, since background processes can temporarily drain power. Even so, some iPhone 17 users have described stranger behavior, including a buzzing speaker or static noise while the device is charging.
A more disruptive issue appears when the battery runs completely flat and the phone refuses to recharge through a cable. In that situation, wireless charging becomes the only option, which is inconvenient for anyone who does not have a MagSafe charger nearby.
iOS 26 still feels rough for some owners
Software is another area where the experience has not felt fully polished. Some users report stuttering performance, choppy animations, slower camera behavior, and a device that runs warmer during 5G use or while charging.
Apple has already released fixes in iOS 26.0.1 for cellular, Bluetooth, CarPlay disconnection, and Apple Intelligence activation. Even so, complaints about sluggish performance continue, and some of them may be linked to problematic iOS installations restored from old backups.
The result is a lineup that continues to attract buyers while also drawing unusually detailed criticism from people who use it every day. Scratches, dents, color changes, charging problems, and software lag all point to the same reality: the iPhone 17 series still has several issues that are hard to overlook once the phone leaves the box.
