Google Messages Restores Easier SIM Switching for Dual-SIM Users in Beta Update

Google Messages is making dual-SIM switching easier again, and that change matters most for people who regularly send texts from more than one number. The latest beta version brings back a faster path to SIM selection, even if it still does not fully restore the old one-tap behavior.

The update addresses a small but important friction point that appeared after Google redesigned the interface. For dual-SIM users, the process had become more cumbersome, especially when switching numbers before sending an SMS or message.

A quicker path returns to the compose area

Google Messages now shows a new “Switch SIM” button in the latest beta build, according to PiunikaWeb. The button appears from the menu when a user taps the message compose field.

Its placement is more practical than the previous setup because it keeps SIM access close to the main typing area. Google also places it alongside other quick actions such as “AI Writing” and “Autofill,” which makes the option feel more integrated into the normal messaging flow.

That is a meaningful shift from the earlier redesign. The SIM choice had been pushed farther away from the conversation screen, which made the process noticeably less convenient.

Not fully back to the old one-tap method

The return of SIM switching does not mean Google has restored the exact experience that existed before the interface change. Tapping “Switch SIM” does not immediately toggle between SIM 1 and SIM 2.

Instead, the button opens a SIM selection screen first. After choosing the desired card, the user only needs to press back once to return to the conversation and continue typing.

That still leaves one extra step compared with the older one-tap approach. Even so, it is much less demanding than the previous workflow that required opening contact details, finding the SIM option, making the selection, and then returning to the chat.

Why the change matters for dual-SIM users

For people who split personal and work use across two numbers, even a small reduction in taps can make a difference. Messaging often happens quickly, and switching to the right line before sending a text is one of the most frequent actions on a dual-SIM phone.

The current setup also helps reduce mistakes. Google Messages now shows the carrier name in the compose field area, giving users an extra cue about which SIM is active before the message goes out.

That detail is useful because it lets users verify the active line without opening another menu or guessing which number is in use. On devices with two active cards, that confirmation is practical and easy to notice.

Beta only for now

The feature is available only to users on the Google Messages beta channel at the moment. There is no confirmation yet on when it will reach the stable version for everyone.

Even so, the direction of the change is clear. Google appears to be correcting one of the more inconvenient side effects of its interface redesign by bringing SIM controls back closer to the point where messages are written.

For now, beta users are the first to benefit from the improved flow. Stable-channel users will need to wait until Google rolls the change out more broadly.
