Apple Intelligence’s Free Upgrade Is Coming, and Only These iPhones Get It

Apple is preparing a major upgrade to Apple Intelligence, but the change will not reach every iPhone owner. The new AI features will be offered for free only on selected models, underscoring how central hardware support has become to Apple’s AI strategy.

For users with compatible devices, the update is set to make the iPhone feel more personal and more practical in daily use. Apple is pushing AI deeper into the core experience, rather than treating it as an optional extra.

What Apple Intelligence is designed to do

Apple Intelligence is built to simplify routine tasks and make everyday interactions more context-aware. It can help manage calendars automatically and suggest replies or actions in the Messages app based on the conversation.

The system can also surface relevant photos from a user’s library when someone asks for a specific image. That reduces the time spent searching manually and makes it easier to share content quickly.

Safari is part of the upgrade as well. With the “Notify Me” feature, users can ask the browser to monitor a webpage periodically, such as checking stock availability or price changes.

Safari can also organize tabs automatically by topic. For people who keep many pages open at once, that should make browsing more structured and efficient.

Photo editing gets a bigger role

One of the most noticeable gains is in image editing. Apple Intelligence lets users remove unwanted objects from photos without needing advanced editing skills.

It also allows background expansion without requiring professional software such as Photoshop. Another new tool, Spatial Reframing, gives users more flexibility to adjust composition after a photo has been taken.

For people who shoot and edit frequently on their phones, those tools point to a more capable creative workflow directly on the device. Apple is clearly positioning the iPhone as a stronger photo and content tool, not just a communication device.

Which iPhones are eligible

The upgraded Apple Intelligence will arrive alongside iOS 17 in the fall, but the free rollout is limited to a narrow group of devices. Apple has confirmed support for the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, the entire iPhone 16 lineup, the iPhone 17 models, and the iPhone Air.

Any model outside that list will not receive the new Apple Intelligence update. That makes the feature feel exclusive, while also showing that Apple’s AI capabilities depend on specific hardware requirements.

Apple’s wider AI direction

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, said the company wants to turn advanced technology into products that feel intuitive and useful. He also stressed that AI only matters when it is built into the tools people use every day.

Federighi added that AI should be centered on user needs, built around personal context, and developed with privacy in mind at every stage. That philosophy is shaping Apple Intelligence as a system meant to fit naturally into ordinary use.

With that approach, Apple is aiming for a more personal platform experience. The company sees AI as a way to simplify tasks, support creativity, and make device interactions feel smarter without adding friction.
