iQOO Neo 12 is emerging as one of the most closely watched gaming phones in development, largely because of a display specification that has long been considered out of reach for mass-market OLED panels. The device is said to be testing a 2K OLED screen with a 165Hz refresh rate, a combination that would challenge assumptions about current panel limits.
That possibility matters because OnePlus previously stated that the industry could not yet deliver a 2K OLED panel running at 165Hz. If the latest leak proves accurate, iQOO may end up doing what a major rival said was not technically available at the time.
A display combination that caught industry attention
According to well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, iQOO Neo 12 is being developed with a 2K OLED display supporting a 165Hz refresh rate. The same report also says the phone is being tested with an even higher mode reaching 185Hz.
The leak stands out because smartphone makers often face a trade-off between resolution and refresh rate. Higher resolution can improve clarity, while a faster refresh rate can make motion feel smoother, but combining both at this level has remained difficult for many panel makers.
Why OnePlus’ earlier position matters
The discussion became more intense after OnePlus said last year that a 2K OLED panel at 165Hz was not technically achievable at that moment. When introducing the OnePlus 15, the company explained that limitations in luminescent material and circuit technology were the main barriers.
As a result, OnePlus chose a 1.5K display with a 165Hz refresh rate for the OnePlus 15 instead of pursuing the higher-resolution option. That decision now frames iQOO Neo 12 as a possible counterexample if the leak turns out to be true.
Possible first in the world
If the reported specifications reach the commercial product, iQOO Neo 12 could become the first smartphone in the world to ship with a 2K 165Hz OLED panel. That would be especially notable because most mass-produced 2K panels today still top out at 144Hz.
For the premium gaming segment, the appeal is obvious. A sharper panel paired with a very fast refresh rate can offer both detailed visuals and fluid animation, which is exactly the kind of balance high-end mobile gamers often want.
185Hz is being tested, but not in the same context as ROG Phone 9 Pro
The same leak suggests iQOO’s R&D team is also testing 185Hz. Asus already offers 185Hz on the ROG Phone 9 Pro, but that device uses a Full HD or 1080p panel rather than 2K.
That distinction is important. If iQOO can combine 2K resolution with 185Hz, it would move beyond what is currently common in the gaming phone category and potentially strengthen its position in the premium performance segment.
Performance hardware is expected to match the screen ambitions
Beyond the display, iQOO Neo 12 is also rumored to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Other details have not been confirmed, but the phone is expected to target users looking for flagship-level performance and gaming-oriented hardware.
Reports also indicate that iQOO may introduce the Neo 12 in the second half of 2026. For now, the company has not officially confirmed either the specifications or the launch timing.
The larger takeaway is that smartphone display competition is still moving quickly, especially in the gaming tier. If iQOO really brings a 2K 165Hz OLED, or even pushes to 185Hz, the Neo 12 could become one of the most closely followed premium phones of its generation.
