Google Pixel Watch is often seen as a device for checking the time, tracking health, and handling notifications. In practice, several lesser-used features make the smartwatch far more useful in daily routines than many owners may realize.
Some of these functions have been available since the first Pixel Watch launched in 2022. Others are newer additions that are expected to continue evolving with Wear OS 7.
Hand gestures reduce screen taps
The small display on a smartwatch can make touch navigation feel less convenient. Pixel Watch addresses that limitation with hand gestures that let users issue commands without repeatedly touching the screen.
One of the most practical is double pinch, which is done by tapping the thumb and index finger together twice. It can be used to stop a timer, reply with a quick message, scroll notifications, or take a photo.
There is also a wrist-rotation gesture for dismissing notifications, silencing calls, or turning off alarms. The Raise to Talk feature even allows users to lift the watch near the ear and speak directly to Gemini.
Pixel Watch can control the phone camera from the wrist
Although the watch does not include a built-in camera, it can still work as a remote through the Camera app on Wear OS. That makes it useful when a phone is placed on a tripod or set far from the user.
From the Pixel Watch screen, users can view a preview and then capture photos or record video without touching the phone. Settings such as timer, zoom, and front or rear camera selection can also be adjusted directly from the watch.
The same double pinch gesture can be used to start recording video or take a picture quickly. The Camera app must first be downloaded from the Play Store before the feature becomes active.
Payments are now faster with NFC
Contactless payments have long been available on Pixel Watch through Google Wallet, but the process still required users to open the app first. Google has now introduced express pay to shorten that step.
With this feature, users only need to bring the unlocked Pixel Watch close to a payment terminal without opening Google Wallet in advance. Google says the feature remains secure because the watch can recognize whether the user genuinely intends to pay.
The result is a transaction flow that feels faster and smoother at the register.
Alerts appear when the phone is left behind
Phone-left-behind alerts are becoming more common on smartwatches, and Pixel Watch now supports the function as well. It is not enabled by default, so users need to switch it on manually.
To activate it, users must open the Pixel Watch app on the phone, go to Watch Preferences, then Security, and turn on Notify when left behind. Once enabled, the watch uses Bluetooth and location to detect when the user moves away from the phone.
If separation is detected, the Pixel Watch sends a notification. Bluetooth must remain on across both devices for the feature to work properly.
Google Maps still works without internet
Navigation in unfamiliar places becomes easier with Google Maps, and Pixel Watch benefits from offline map support as well. The feature is especially useful when internet access is limited or unavailable.
Users first search for a location in Google Maps on the connected phone, then download the map for offline access. When the Pixel Watch is charging, the offline map syncs automatically to the watch.
Once stored, the map can be used without internet to view locations, monitor positioning, and follow certain routes. For users who move around frequently, this gives Pixel Watch more value than a basic activity tracker.
