Huawei has taken the open-ear category a step further with the global debut of the FreeClip 2 S in Malaysia. The new earbuds arrive alongside the Pura 90s Series and MatePad Air 2026, but the audio device is the one drawing attention for its focus on comfort, awareness, and smarter day-to-day use.
Rather than sealing off the ear canal, the FreeClip 2 S uses an open-ear C-bridge design that lets outside sound remain audible. That approach makes it easier to stay aware of surroundings while listening to music or taking calls, which remains a major selling point for this category.
Built for lighter wear over long sessions
Huawei says the FreeClip 2 S uses liquid silicone that is 25% softer than the previous generation. The design was refined using data from more than 10,000 ear samples, and each earbud weighs just 5.1 grams.
The company also added automatic left-right recognition, allowing either earbud to be worn on either ear without manual orientation adjustments. For users who prefer a less intrusive fit, that detail can make the experience feel more flexible in daily use.
Audio hardware and AI-driven processing
Inside, the FreeClip 2 S carries a 10.8mm dual-diaphragm driver in a compact acoustic unit. Huawei says the new driver structure is designed to improve bass response while keeping the overall sound balanced.
The earbuds also include an AI-powered NPU for audio and voice processing. Its functions cover call noise reduction, adaptive volume adjustment based on the environment and content, and adaptive voice enhancement to make conversations clearer.
A three-microphone system with AI noise reduction is included as well, along with an inverse sound wave system intended to reduce audio leakage and protect privacy during listening.
Spatial audio, gestures, and app control
FreeClip 2 S supports spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, plus gesture-based controls and head-motion call management. These features make interaction more hands-free, especially for users who want fewer taps during routine use.
Connectivity is handled through Bluetooth 6.0 with dual-device support. Settings can be managed in the Huawei Audio Connect app, where users can customize controls, switch devices, check battery status, and adjust a 10-band equalizer.
