Samsung Electronics and Indonesian youth activists have joined forces to protect the environment through innovative technology and community engagement. This collaboration is part of Samsung’s ongoing partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Generation17 initiative, launched in 2020 to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This year, Samsung introduced five new young leaders in Generation17, highlighting Brigitta Gunawan, an Indonesian environmental activist dedicated to marine conservation. Brigitta founded the nonprofit 30×30 Indonesia at age 17 to promote marine education and support Indonesia’s target to protect 30% of its national waters by 2045, aligning with global efforts to preserve 30% of land and sea by 2030.
Technology Empowering Environmental Advocacy
According to Bagus Erlangga, Head of Corporate Marketing at Samsung Electronics Indonesia, Samsung sees technology as a catalyst for positive change. The company supports Brigitta by providing her with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, a flagship device she describes as a "complete studio." This smartphone enables her to document underwater ecosystems with exceptional detail using its 200MP camera, even in low light, enhancing public awareness about marine protection.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s advanced features, such as Audio Eraser and Auto Trim, allow Brigitta to efficiently edit and share conservation videos in real-time on social media. Additionally, she uses the S Pen and Note Assist tools for managing ideas and creating content on the go. Samsung devices also power Diverseas, an immersive virtual reality (VR) educational program developed by Brigitta’s foundation, Permata Biru Hayati, which simulates underwater experiences in 360° for students and communities.
Integrating Activism and Healthy Living
Brigitta balances her demanding environmental activities with personal wellness using Samsung’s Galaxy Watch. Features like Running Coach, Energy Score, and health monitoring tools such as Antioxidant Index and Vascular Load help her maintain physical and mental health while sustaining her advocacy work.
Global Networks and Local Impact
As a Generation17 cohort member, Brigitta gains access to a global network of experts from various fields including environment, technology, and business. This platform enables collaboration with organizations such as the United Nations and expands the reach of her environmental campaigns beyond Indonesia.
Samsung’s role extends beyond sponsorship, providing strategic technology access that amplifies young leaders’ voices on the world stage. Brigitta emphasizes the importance of democratizing technology to empower youth communities across Indonesia in natural preservation efforts.
Building a Greener Future Through Innovation
The Generation17 program reflects Samsung and UNDP’s shared commitment to sustainable innovation. Since 2019, the initiative has grown through tools like the Samsung Global Goals app, which educates users about SDGs and encourages contributions via Galaxy devices.
By combining technology, passion, and cross-generational collaboration, Samsung and emerging leaders such as Brigitta demonstrate how innovation can drive meaningful environmental protection. Their joint efforts underscore the critical role of marine ecosystems as the foundation for global life and planetary health.
