That move matters because mobile AI is becoming more demanding. As more processing happens directly on the device, memory headroom becomes one of the key factors that determines how smooth those features feel in everyday use.
A bigger role for on-device AI
Apple is reportedly aiming to make Apple Intelligence work more evenly across the iPhone 18 family. That is also why a 12GB configuration on the standard model would be significant. It would reduce the gap between regular and Pro variants, especially in areas that rely on memory-heavy processing.
The gap between standard and Pro could narrow
At present, the iPhone 17 standard version still uses 8GB of RAM. The Pro models already sit at 12GB, which makes the difference in memory capacity easy to see.
