WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new way to handle messages on Android by using floating notification bubbles. If the feature reaches the public release, chats could appear above other apps as small circular icons, allowing replies without leaving the screen that is already in use.
The idea is designed to make messaging feel faster during everyday multitasking. Whether someone is watching YouTube, working through other apps, or playing a game, a new message could remain accessible in a compact floating window instead of forcing a full switch to WhatsApp.
A familiar model for Android users
The bubble format is not an unfamiliar concept in Android. Facebook Messenger has long used a similar approach, and WhatsApp appears to be following a pattern that many users already recognize.
In this setup, conversations from both personal contacts and groups would appear as small floating icons. Tapping the icon would open a compact chat window, making it possible to read and respond while the main app stays open in the background.
How the bubble interface would work
The notification bubbles are meant to reduce the number of steps needed to answer a message. Rather than opening WhatsApp in full-screen mode, the user could interact with a smaller chat view that sits on top of the current app.
This approach may be especially useful for people who frequently move between different tasks on their phones. A message can be checked quickly, answered immediately, and then dismissed without interrupting the activity already underway.
WhatsApp also appears to be adding clear visual cues inside the bubble. The contact or group photo would be shown together with a small WhatsApp logo so the source of the message is easy to identify at a glance.
Why the feature matters for multitasking
The practical value of notification bubbles becomes clearer in situations where the phone is already being used for something else. During gaming or video playback, for example, the message would still be visible without forcing the user to abandon the main activity.
That makes the feature appealing for users who depend on WhatsApp for family communication, workplace coordination, or group conversations. Important messages could stay within reach while other apps continue running normally.
Android itself already supports floating notification-style interactions, which makes the feature technically aligned with the platform. That support helps explain why the idea fits naturally into the way Android manages overlaid notifications.
Still under testing
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is not yet available to all users. It is still in internal testing before reaching any wider beta release.
That early stage gives WhatsApp room to check stability, comfort, and compatibility across different Android devices. For now, the notification bubble remains a preview of how WhatsApp may make messaging less disruptive for users who want to stay active in apps, games, and videos while keeping conversations close at hand.
