The clearest sign yet that Insta360 is preparing a more ambitious compact gimbal camera is the appearance of Luna Ultra’s on-device menu. The interface reportedly shows recording options up to 8K, placing the device in a far more competitive position even before an official launch has been announced.
That detail has drawn attention because the leaked images do more than reveal a spec sheet. They also show a camera with a modular body, an unusual gimbal layout, and a folding screen that appears designed to make handheld shooting easier in a wide range of situations.
A modular form factor that stands out
The most distinctive element in the leak is the device’s so-called twisted modular design. Instead of following the familiar shape of a pocket-sized gimbal camera, Luna Ultra appears to use a body that allows the gimbal head to be removed or rotated.
If that design holds up in the final product, it could give users more freedom when adjusting camera angles. It also suggests a device built for flexibility rather than a simple fixed handheld setup.
The leaked photos reportedly show the camera from several sides, making the overall concept easier to read. Taken together, the images point to a compact product that is being positioned for more versatile shooting than a standard gimbal camera.
8K is visible, but its timing remains unclear
The on-screen interface is one of the strongest clues so far. Alongside 4K and 2.7K options, the menu reportedly includes 8K recording, although there is still no confirmation that the feature will be available from day one.
That leaves open the possibility that 8K support may arrive later through a software update. Even so, the presence of the option alone signals that Insta360 is aiming higher than basic portable capture.
The imaging hardware also appears to support that ambition. Luna is said to use a 1-inch sensor paired with an f/1.8 lens, while 10-bit iLog color and up to 14 stops of dynamic range are also mentioned. Those specifications suggest a strong focus on image quality in a compact body.
A display built for easier framing
Another key detail in the leak is the screen. The device is said to feature a 2-inch OLED touchscreen that can fold and rotate, which should make framing easier for selfies, vlogging, and awkward shooting angles.
Brightness is reportedly around 1,000 nits. That level would help the display remain visible outdoors or under strong light, where compact camera screens can become difficult to use.
Combined with the modular gimbal head, the folding screen could make the device feel far less constrained than a typical pocket camera. It also reduces the need for extra accessories when changing shooting positions.
Two versions appear to be planned
The Luna line is said to include two main models. The single-lens version may carry the name Luna Pro, while the dual-lens model is reportedly called Insta360 Luna Ultra.
On Luna Ultra, a telephoto module is said to sit alongside a wide lens. That setup is reportedly intended to enable up to 3x optical zoom and up to 6x lossless zoom.
This two-model strategy points to different user needs within the same product family. Luna Pro appears to target those who want a simpler device, while Luna Ultra seems aimed at users who want more flexibility from the camera system.
DJI Pocket is the obvious target
The broader market context is just as important as the hardware leaks. The Luna line is expected to compete directly with DJI’s Pocket series, which dominates the compact gimbal category.
That competition could become more interesting while DJI is still waiting for regulatory clarity around Pocket 4. At the same time, the actual launch timing for Luna has not been confirmed.
The rumor mill points to a possible May release, but that remains unverified. For now, the leaked images and interface hints suggest that Insta360 is trying to combine a large sensor, high-resolution video, a flexible display, and a modular design into one compact device.
