Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max May Redefine Premium Zoom, Dual Telephoto With 10x Optical Reach

Huawei’s next top-tier phone is being watched closely for one reason above all: its camera system may push zoom hardware much further than before. Recent leaks point to the Mate 90 Pro Max arriving with dual telephoto cameras, including one unit said to support 10x optical zoom.

That detail alone has made the device a talking point in the premium phone segment. A setup like that would give Huawei more room to handle mid-range and long-distance shots without leaning as heavily on digital zoom.

A more aggressive zoom setup

The leak comes from Smart Pikachu, a Weibo tipster with an active track record in Huawei-related rumors. According to that claim, Huawei is preparing the Mate 90 Pro Max with two telephoto cameras, and one of them would reach 10x optical zoom.

That would mark a major step up in ambition for the series. Dual telephoto systems are designed to offer more flexibility across different shooting distances, especially when a phone needs to keep detail and clarity while zooming in.

How far the current generation goes

The rumored leap becomes clearer when set against the Mate 80 Pro Max. That model, launched in November 2025, carries two 50MP telephoto cameras with 4x optical zoom and 6.2x optical zoom, both with OIS.

Compared with that arrangement, the reported Mate 90 Pro Max configuration sounds much more extreme. The focus is not just on adding a higher number, but on pushing optical zoom performance into a new range for Huawei’s flagship line.

Camera hardware may define the series

Zoom is only part of the story. Another leak suggests that a 200MP main camera may appear across the entire Mate 90 lineup, including the standard model and the Pro version.

That would represent a broader rollout than before, since high-resolution imaging would no longer be reserved only for the most expensive variant. There is also talk that Huawei may pair that 200MP camera with a 1-inch sensor, although that detail has not been confirmed.

Even so, the combination sounds consistent with Huawei’s current direction. A large sensor would be expected to help with light capture, while a high-resolution main camera could strengthen the overall imaging package.

A closer link to the Pura line

The reported camera direction also makes the Mate 90 Pro Max feel closer to the Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max. Both appear to lean on high-resolution main sensors and more extreme zoom capabilities as their key imaging strengths.

That overlap suggests Huawei may be blending the strengths of its two major product families. The Mate series has long carried the company’s premium flagship identity, while the Pura line has been known for its imaging focus.

An early arrival into a crowded flagship market

The Mate 90 series is said to launch around October. That would place it slightly ahead of the Mate 80 Pro Max’s November 2025 debut, giving Huawei an earlier shot at attention in the premium market.

The timing also matters because the competition will be intense. Phones powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are expected to compete in the same segment, which raises the pressure on Huawei to stand out with features that are easy to notice.

For now, all of these details remain in the rumor stage. Still, the direction is clear enough: Huawei appears to be preparing a Mate 90 lineup built around stronger imaging hardware, with the Mate 90 Pro Max positioned as the model most likely to push zoom performance to a new level.
