Apple’s September schedule is starting to look more concrete, and the most closely watched part is not just the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Attention is also shifting to the possibility that Apple may use the same stage to introduce its first foldable iPhone.
That combination makes this launch cycle unusually important. If the current timing pattern holds, Apple could be preparing a keynote that links its next premium slab-style iPhones with a long-rumored new form factor.
A familiar September window is taking shape
Apple has historically favored the first half of September for its iPhone announcements, often choosing Tuesday or Wednesday for the event. Based on that pattern and the 2026 calendar, industry observers are pointing to around 9 September 2026 as the most likely keynote date.
The second week of September is being treated as the most realistic launch window. Apple also tends to avoid scheduling the event immediately after Labor Day in the United States, largely because of international travel, retail partner attendance, and preparation needs across development and production teams.
Pre-orders and retail availability may follow the usual cadence
If Apple sticks to its usual rhythm, pre-orders for the iPhone 18 line could open on Friday, 11 September 2026. Apple typically starts ordering shortly after the keynote, usually at 8:00 a.m. Pacific time.
The first retail availability for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is then expected a week later, on 18 September 2026. The foldable model, described in current chatter as iPhone Ultra, may arrive a little later because large-scale production of a more complex device is harder to ramp up.
iPhone Ultra becomes the headline name
Among all the rumored devices, iPhone Ultra is drawing the most attention. The name is believed to be Apple’s possible label for its first foldable iPhone, although the company has not confirmed it.
If that device does appear, it would mark Apple’s entry into a market already occupied by Samsung, Google, and Huawei. It would also represent Apple’s biggest iPhone design shift in years, with the Ultra positioned as the most premium model in the new lineup.
The rumored hardware points to a larger flexible display, a redesigned hinge, new multitasking behavior, AI-oriented software features, and a price positioned at the very top of the market. Industry analysts say Apple appears to have waited for foldable technology to mature, with a focus on display durability, software continuity, battery efficiency, application behavior, and premium build quality.
What the current hardware rumors suggest
The iPhone 18 Pro is said to feature a 6.3-inch LTPO+ OLED display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max would use a 6.9-inch LTPO+ OLED panel. Both models are expected to support 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates.
For iPhone Ultra, the rumor mill points to an adaptive 120Hz foldable OLED panel. On the performance side, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to use Apple A20 Pro chips built on a 2nm process.
Display changes are also part of the conversation. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are said to move toward a smaller Dynamic Island or partial under-display Face ID, with a punch-hole-style front camera. On the foldable model, under-display Face ID is considered more likely, while the front camera may take an under-display or punch-hole form depending on the final design.
Cameras, connectivity, and materials
The rear camera setup for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is still expected to remain a triple-camera system. The main attention is on a variable aperture camera and improved low-light zoom on the telephoto lens.
The foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to use either two or three rear cameras. Periscope zoom is also being discussed as a possible feature.
Connectivity is expected to remain consistent across the lineup. The three models are said to support Apple’s C2 5G modem and Wi‑Fi 7, while satellite features are also expected to return. Battery capacity is projected to increase as well, including a high-density battery for the foldable device.
Titanium is still expected for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. For iPhone Ultra, the rumors point to a dedicated premium chassis designed specifically for a foldable device.
iOS 27 is expected to arrive alongside the hardware
The hardware launch is also tied to iOS 27, which is expected to be introduced at WWDC on 8 June 2026. Apple usually releases the newest iOS version a few days after the iPhone keynote, before new phones hit stores.
Older iPhone models are expected to receive the update first, while the iPhone 18 lineup would likely ship with iOS 27 preinstalled. The software is said to focus on AI-based features, a better Siri, improved multitasking, smarter on-device intelligence, and deeper Apple ecosystem integration.
That direction fits the expectations around the foldable model, which would likely need software behavior designed more specifically for a larger flexible screen.
Expected pricing keeps the lineup firmly in premium territory
The iPhone 18 Pro is said to start at around $1,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to begin at about $1,199. The iPhone Ultra, if it arrives as rumored, is being discussed at around $2,000.
Taken together, the pricing, timing, and hardware rumors suggest Apple is preparing a launch that could expand the iPhone line in two directions at once: a familiar Pro upgrade cycle and a possible move into foldables.
