Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII is shaping up to be one of the more noticeable redesigns in the series’ recent history. The strongest clue comes from Sony’s own teaser, which points to a new rear camera layout ahead of the confirmed launch event on 13 May.
That visual change does not appear to signal a break from Xperia’s core identity. Sony still seems to be keeping manual camera control and creator-focused hardware at the center of the phone’s appeal, even as the exterior moves toward a cleaner and more modern look.
A new camera layout leads the change
The rear camera arrangement is drawing the most attention because it no longer follows the vertical pattern long associated with the Xperia 1 line. Instead, the teaser aligns with recent leaks that suggest a squarer camera module, marking a clear visual refresh without removing the familiar Xperia character.
This is a meaningful shift for a brand that has often stayed conservative with its industrial design. Sony appears to be updating the phone’s appearance in a more visible way while preserving the features that matter most to users who value hands-on control and imaging tools.
Flagship hardware remains in place
The reported changes are not limited to design. Xperia 1 VIII is also said to feature a 6.5-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ HDR support.
Under the hood, the device is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It is also said to come with 12GB of RAM, keeping it firmly positioned in flagship territory.
Telephoto may be the biggest functional shift
The most discussed leak concerns the telephoto camera. Sony’s previous Xperia 1 VII reportedly used a continuous variable zoom system, but Xperia 1 VIII is said to move to a fixed 3x periscope optical zoom camera instead.
That camera is rumored to use a 48MP sensor with a 1/1.56-inch size. On paper, a fixed zoom may sound less flexible, but the larger sensor could improve detail, low-light performance, and consistency at the zoom range most people use most often.
For comparison, the earlier telephoto unit is said to have used a much smaller 12MP sensor. That makes the new direction look less like a downgrade and more like a shift in priorities from versatility toward image quality.
Other cameras are also getting attention
Sony’s imaging update does not stop at the telephoto lens. The main rear camera and ultra-wide camera are both rumored to use 48MP sensors as well.
On the front, the 12MP selfie camera is expected to stay unchanged from last year. That suggests Sony is focusing its biggest efforts on the back camera system rather than overhauling every part of the setup at once.
Battery, protection, and color options
Beyond imaging and performance, Xperia 1 VIII is also said to carry a battery of around 5,000mAh. IP68 water and dust resistance is also expected to return, which would keep the phone in line with flagship standards.
Color options are reportedly broader this time too. The four names circulating are Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
Pricing and release timing still need confirmation
Some early Amazon listings that were later removed pointed to a European price above €1,800 and suggested a June release window. Even so, the only confirmed details at this stage are the 13 May launch event and Sony’s teaser, which already reinforces the rumor of a revised rear camera design.
That leaves the final name, official pricing, and market availability still awaiting Sony’s full announcement. For now, Xperia 1 VIII looks set to be a familiar Xperia in philosophy, but a noticeably updated one in appearance and camera strategy.
