Social Security Payments Hit Wednesday, May 27, Millions Born 21st To 31st Get Paid

Millions of Social Security recipients are set to receive their latest monthly benefit on Wednesday, May 27, as the Social Security Administration closes out its May payment schedule. The payment goes to beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of any month, which makes this the final Wednesday distribution for the month.

Most Social Security payments follow a birth-date schedule across three Wednesdays each month, and May’s final run fits that pattern. The SSA says the timing depends on the beneficiary’s date of birth, although people who claim based on someone else’s work record use that person’s birthday instead.

Who is included in the May 27 payment?

The May 27 payment is for beneficiaries whose birthdays fall from the 21st through the 31st. That group is part of the larger pool of 71.1 million Social Security beneficiaries who receive benefits in the United States.

For May, the full Wednesday schedule was split into three groups. People born on the 1st through the 10th were paid on Wednesday, May 13, while those born on the 11th through the 20th received benefits on Wednesday, May 20.

Other May payments were sent earlier in the month

Not every beneficiary waits for a Wednesday payment. Some long-term recipients who started claiming before May 1997 are usually paid on the third day of the month, regardless of birth date, but that payment was moved to Friday, May 1 because May 3 fell on a Sunday.

Dual recipients who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, were also paid on Friday, May 1. Normally, SSI arrives on the first and Social Security on the third, but the Sunday schedule pushed both payments earlier.

Average monthly benefit amounts

According to SSA figures, the average monthly benefit amounts are $2,026.41 for retirement beneficiaries, $1,493.20 for disability beneficiaries, and $1,625.56 for survivor beneficiaries. Those figures reflect the typical monthly payments being distributed through the program.

How beneficiaries can receive payments

The SSA allows beneficiaries to update bank-account details through the agency’s online my Social Security tool. Payments can also be sent to the Direct Express Card, which is a debit card used for federal disbursements.

People who want to enroll in Direct Express can call 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or they can visit a Social Security office. The payment system is designed to keep benefits moving on schedule while giving recipients a few different ways to receive their money.
