System Failure Plunges Jamaica Into Darkness, Power Restoration Set To Roll Out In Phases

Jamaica is dealing with a nationwide power outage after the Jamaica Public Service said a system failure caused the blackout across the island. Energy Minister Daryl Vaz also confirmed the country was experiencing an islandwide outage in a post on X, adding official weight to the reports of widespread darkness.

JPS said it is now moving to restore electricity for customers in phases. The company said the process will follow a pre-determined sequence, while its teams continue to investigate what triggered the incident.

Power restoration will come in stages

The utility’s main focus is getting service back online in an orderly way. That means customers are not expected to come back on at the same time, since the restoration plan has been set out in advance to manage the recovery across the grid.

JPS said it is taking steps to restore supply as information becomes available. The company also said it will keep customers updated during the recovery process, signaling that more details may follow as the investigation continues.

Cause still under review

At this stage, the company has not publicly identified the exact reason for the failure. JPS said it is investigating the incident, which suggests technical teams are still working to determine what went wrong before a full explanation is released.

The blackout has affected the entire island, making it one of the most significant service disruptions reported by the utility. For now, the priority remains restoration, with JPS asking for patience and understanding while power is brought back in phases.
