Liverpool Told Schlotterbeck Prefers Real Madrid, Rudiger Could Tip The Balance

Real Madrid’s search for a second centre-back is already taking shape, and Nico Schlotterbeck has moved into the frame as a leading option. The Borussia Dortmund defender is available through a €50m release clause, while Liverpool are also understood to be watching the situation closely.

The attraction for Madrid is clear. The club want another central defender to arrive alongside Ibrahima Konate, and Schlotterbeck is seen as a strong fit for the role.

Rudiger’s influence could matter

Antonio Rudiger has played a notable part in Schlotterbeck’s thinking, with the Germany international said to have encouraged a move to Real Madrid earlier in the week. The two share a strong relationship from their time together with the national team.

That connection could work in Madrid’s favour, because playing alongside Rudiger at club level is reported to appeal to Schlotterbeck. CaughtOffside has reported that the 26-year-old would prioritise a switch to the Spanish capital if the choice is between the two clubs.

Decision still pending in Madrid

Real Madrid have not yet made a final call on their second centre-back signing, and the decision is still expected to be made by Jose Mourinho. Ruben Dias and Alessandro Bastoni have also been considered, but Schlotterbeck is currently the preferred target.

If Madrid decide to move in a different direction, Liverpool could still be there as a realistic alternative. For now, though, the balance appears to be leaning toward the Bernabeu, helped by the €50m price tag and the appeal of linking up with Rudiger.
