TCU is bringing back one of its most accomplished players in a new role that connects the program to both its past and its future. Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane will join the Horned Frogs as chief basketball officer, adding a former star to Jamie Dixon’s staff.

Bane will serve as a special advisor to Dixon and volunteer his time in the position. The move also gives TCU a direct link to the NBA, where Bane has built his career since leaving Fort Worth.

A familiar face with rare program credentials

Bane played for TCU from 2016-20 and is widely regarded as one of the best players in school history. He is the program’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 249, and he also leads TCU in wins with 84 and games played with 141.

His consistency stood out as much as his production, since he never missed a game during his college career. Bane also became the first TCU player to earn first team All-Big 12 honors in 2020.

What TCU expects from the new role

According to www.star-telegram.com, Bane will be available as a mentor to players and as a liaison to the NBA. That combination fits a roster that can benefit from both veteran perspective and a clearer path to the professional level.

Dixon said in a statement that TCU is “thrilled” to welcome Bane as chief basketball officer, noting that his background as a TCU graduate and six-year NBA professional brings a unique mix of experience, perspective and passion.

From college standout to NBA veteran

After his TCU career, Bane was selected 30th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. He spent his first five seasons with Memphis before being traded to Orlando last season.

For TCU, the hire is less about nostalgia and more about keeping one of its top alumni close to the program. Bane said in a statement that his time as a student-athlete at TCU was “truly special” and that he hopes to help build on the success and culture Dixon has established.

His new position gives the Horned Frogs a prominent former player on the staff while strengthening the bridge between TCU Basketball and the NBA. It also turns one of the program’s biggest names into an active part of what comes next.
