The Washington Capitals have brought Alex Ovechkin back for one more season, and the move keeps the franchise tied to the player who has defined it for more than two decades. The one-year extension gives the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer another chance to chase wins, milestones and a playoff berth with Washington.
According to www.nhl.com, the deal includes a $1 million salary, a $4.75 million games-played bonus for 10 games and a $3.25 million signing bonus. That structure gives Ovechkin an average annual value of $4.25 million.
Why This Return Matters
Ovechkin turns 41 in September, but his most recent season showed he is still producing at a high level. He led the Capitals in goals with 32 and points with 64, marking the 21st time in 21 seasons that he has led or co-led the team in goals.
His production also pushed several NHL milestones forward. He became the first player in league history to score 900 regular-season goals and reached 1,000 career goals combined in the regular season and playoffs.
| Key Ovechkin Notes | Figure | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Contract length | 1 year | Another season in Washington |
| AAV | $4.25 million | Combines salary, bonuses and incentives |
| 2025-26 goals | 32 | Led the Capitals |
| 2025-26 points | 64 | Led the Capitals |
| Career NHL goals | 929 | All-time league record |
Ovechkin’s resume already places him among the most decorated players in NHL history. He is the only player to win a Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe, Calder, Art Ross, Hart, Ted Lindsay and Maurice Richard Trophy, and he has collected 19 individual awards in all.
More Than A Scorer For Washington
The extension also keeps a familiar leader in the room as the Capitals try to build on a roster that has been reshaped this offseason. Senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick said the team believes the additions made this summer will create more chances for Ovechkin to score and help the group compete more effectively.
Ted Leonsis called Ovechkin the greatest goal scorer in NHL history and said his commitment to teammates, the organization and the fans has remained constant since the Capitals drafted him first overall in 2004. Leonsis also pointed to the team’s push to compete for both a playoff berth and a Stanley Cup.
On the ice, Ovechkin continues to stack historical markers. He has 1,687 points in 1,573 career games with Washington, and he leads the franchise in games played, goals, points, playoff games played, playoff goals and playoff points.
Milestones, Records And Longevity
This upcoming season will put Ovechkin in a small group of players to spend 22 seasons with one franchise, joining Sidney Crosby, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Stan Mikita and Steve Yzerman. It will also make him the longest-tenured athlete in Washington, D.C. professional sports history, surpassing Walter Johnson’s 21 seasons with the Washington Senators.
The 2026-27 campaign will be his 18th season as captain, moving him into third place on the NHL’s all-time list for captaincy tenure. Only Crosby and Yzerman have worn the “C” longer.
| Career Milestone | Ovechkin Figure | Historical Context |
|---|---|---|
| Seasons with one franchise | 22 | Joins a small group of NHL greats |
| Seasons as Capitals captain | 18 | Third-longest in NHL history |
| Career points with Washington | 1,687 | Franchise record |
| Career goals with Washington | 929 | Franchise record and NHL record |
Beyond the record book, Ovechkin’s impact continues to reach far outside the rink. His work with THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer has already raised more than $250,000 for the Alex Ovechkin GR8 CHASE Pediatric Cancer Research Grant, with Monumental Sports & Entertainment matching each goal-related donation he makes during the chase.
He also remains active with the American Special Hockey Association, where he has served as an ambassador since 2014 and recently completed his eighth season hosting an annual event. The organization has grown dramatically during his involvement, expanding from 35 programs in 30 cities to 144 programs nationwide and with affiliates in Canada.
Ovechkin’s influence in the Washington area has also helped grow youth hockey participation, a trend often described as the “Ovechkin Effect.” USA Hockey registration in the Washington, D.C., area has increased by more than 186% since he was drafted, with regional participation up 70% from 2005-06 through 2024-25.
As the Capitals move into a new season, they will do so with the same player who has shaped their identity, their history and much of the sport’s modern record book. For Washington, Ovechkin’s return is not just about one more contract, but about keeping a defining figure in place for another run.
