LeConte Lodge Demolition Will Trigger Smokies Traffic Delays, But Hikers Can Still Pass

Great Smoky Mountains National Park will begin demolishing the LeConte Lodge Recreation Building on July 14, and the work will briefly ripple beyond the mountain itself. Airlifts scheduled for that day are expected to slow traffic on U.S. 441 while crews move materials to and from Mount Le Conte.

The park said the recreation building has deteriorated beyond repair after decades of exposure at high elevation, and a new building will be constructed later this year. According to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park release cited by www.citizen-times.com, the first airlift window runs from 9 a.m. to noon, with additional flights planned later in the summer.

What Visitors Should Expect

Drivers on Newfound Gap Road near the Oconaluftee Overlook, just south of Newfound Gap, should expect temporary delays during the three-hour flight window. Hikers will still be allowed on trails and overlooks around Mount Le Conte, but the lodge grounds will be off-limits during active airlifts for safety reasons.

Item Details Impact Timing
Demolition start LeConte Lodge Recreation Building Construction work begins July 14
Airlift window Helicopter loading and unloading on Mount Le Conte Temporary traffic delays on U.S. 441 9 a.m. to noon
Visitor access Trails and overlooks around the mountain top Open to hikers During airlift operations
LeConte Lodge grounds Gift shop, restrooms, water spigots, and food and beverage services Closed inside the safety perimeter Until the airlift ends at noon

Flaggers will be stationed at three trail locations near LeConte Lodge and may briefly pause hikers when a helicopter is active. The park also noted that a composting privy is available at the Mount Le Conte Shelter, although that shelter is closed because of bear activity.

Water is available at the nearby spring on Trillium Gap Trail, but the park recommends boiling and treating it before use. Throughout the summer, visitors should expect to see more work around the lodge as demolition and reconstruction continue and more airlift schedules are finalized.

A Beloved Lodge With Limited Access

LeConte Lodge sits atop Mount LeConte and is known as the highest guest lodge in the Eastern United States, according to its website. It is reachable only by foot, with llamas packing in supplies, and overnight stays are limited enough that securing a room is often highly competitive.

The buildings stand in an open glade below the summit at about 6,400 feet, making the lodge complex part of one of the park’s most notable high-elevation destinations. The new recreation building will be built in the same character and spirit as the original, preserving the lodge’s long role as a gathering place for guests.

The park said the updated construction timeline and future airlift details will be shared as schedules are finalized. This story will be updated.
