Ten people were hurt during a downtown Tucson shooting early Sunday, including a suspect who was shot by a police officer. The suspect was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition after officers provided first aid.
Nine other people suffered critical gunshot wounds to their arms or legs, police said. The shooting prompted major street closures around one of downtown Tucson’s busiest areas.
What Happened Near 6th Avenue and Congress Street
Police responded at about 2 a.m. after officers in the area heard gunfire near 6th Avenue and Congress Street. Officers ran toward the scene and found a suspect fleeing, according to AZFamily.
An officer then shot the suspect, who was taken into custody. Tucson Fire crews transported the suspect to a hospital after officers rendered first aid.

Investigation and Road Closures
Drivers were urged to avoid the area while investigators work at the scene. The closures affect 6th Avenue between Pennington Street and Broadway Boulevard, as well as Congress Street between Scott and Toole avenues.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Tucson police will conduct a separate internal review to determine whether any department policies were violated.
Once both investigations are complete, the findings will be sent to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review. Investigators are asking anyone with information or video related to the shooting to call 88-CRIME and reference the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
