Brendan Fraser’s Vision for The Mummy 4
Brendan Fraser has expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming "The Mummy 4," stating that it will deliver exactly what fans desire. He revealed in an interview that he has waited two decades to create the "Mummy" film he always envisioned.
Fraser reflected on the previous films, mentioning that while the third installment was a solid standalone movie filmed in Shanghai, it was not the movie he wanted to make. He described the new project as the one “forthcoming” and emphasized his readiness after years of anticipation.
Returning Cast and Director Duo
The new “Mummy” movie will see Fraser reprising his role as Rick O’Connell, joined by Rachel Weisz, who starred alongside him in the first two films but skipped the third. Universal Studios has tasked the directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence, to helm the project. Their previous work includes the successful 2019 film “Ready or Not” and the revival of the “Scream” franchise for Paramount.
Fraser previously expressed openness to returning to the character if the right story idea surfaced. According to Variety, that concept has now been developed, prompting Fraser’s enthusiastic return.
Fraser on What Makes a Successful Mummy Movie
Brendan Fraser critiqued the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, saying it lacked the fun element that made the original series popular. He stated the reboot was “too straight-ahead horror” and missed the thrilling adventure spirit of the classic films. Fraser believes that "The Mummy" should be an exciting and entertaining ride without being too terrifying.
Universal has not yet announced a release date for the new installment, but Fraser’s comments indicate the studio aims to rekindle the franchise’s original charm and appeal to long-time fans. The production promises a return to the blend of action, humor, and adventure that defined the earlier movies.
