Sources: Arkansas Set to Hire Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield as New Head Football Coach

Arkansas is moving forward with a major coaching change by hiring Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield as their new head football coach, sources confirmed. Silverfield, 46, has compiled a 50-25 record at Memphis and led the team to multiple bowl victories and significant wins over Power 4 opponents.

Silverfield’s tenure at Memphis began in 2016 as an offensive line coach before he was promoted to head coach in December 2019. During his time as head coach, he guided the Tigers to eight or more wins in four of six full seasons and achieved a perfect 4-0 record in bowl games as the permanent coach.

The Arkansas Razorbacks decided to part ways with former coach Sam Pittman after a disappointing 2-3 start that included a loss to Memphis. Pittman was dismissed on September 28, with Bobby Petrino stepping in on an interim basis. Arkansas struggled thereafter, losing their final seven games of the season.

Silverfield’s notable achievements at Memphis include four consecutive wins against Power 4 teams, such as victories over West Virginia and Iowa State in recent bowl games. His coaching experience also spans time with the NFL’s Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, as well as collegiate programs like Arizona State.

In recent weeks, Arkansas explored other coaching options. South Florida’s Alex Golesh was reportedly a top target but ultimately accepted the Auburn head coaching position, clearing the way for Arkansas to pursue Silverfield.

Key Facts About Ryan Silverfield:

  1. Head coach at Memphis since December 2019
  2. Overall coaching record: 50 wins, 25 losses
  3. Bowl game record: 4-0 as head coach
  4. Previously served as Memphis offensive line coach (2016-2019)
  5. NFL coaching experience with Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings

Silverfield’s appointment signals Arkansas’ intent to rebuild their football program with a coach who has demonstrated consistency and success at the collegiate level. His track record of wins against Power 4 opponents and bowl victories will be central to the Razorbacks’ efforts to improve in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference.
