Foldable Shipment Targets Cut, Samsung Raises Ambitions For The New Wide Fold 8

Samsung is adjusting its foldable strategy as rising component costs begin to reshape expectations for the next Galaxy lineup. Instead of pushing only for bigger overall volume, the company is now putting unusual emphasis on Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide), a new book-style model that is said to be wider and shorter than the main Fold variant.

That shift comes as the foldable market remains under pressure. Higher component prices, including memory, are making new devices harder to price aggressively, and that is forcing a more cautious outlook for shipments.

A smaller total target for the foldable lineup

According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung is now targeting shipments of around 5 million to 6 million units for its latest Galaxy foldable lineup this year. That is lower than the earlier estimate of about 6.5 million units.

The revised target covers three models: Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide), Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. The changes do not only reflect a smaller overall ambition, but also a different mix inside the lineup.

Fold 8 Wide becomes the biggest surprise

The clearest change is the sharp increase for Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide). It was previously expected to ship about 0.5 million units, but the latest plan raises that goal to around 1.5 million to 2 million units.

That is a significant jump for a model that has not been part of Samsung’s foldable portfolio before. The Wide version is described as a new approach to the book-style format, with a body that is wider and shorter than the standard Fold model that is expected to arrive alongside it.

This design difference appears to be a key reason Samsung is giving the model more room in its shipment plan. It also suggests the company sees stronger potential in a different take on the large foldable form factor.

Other models face softer expectations

The revised outlook is less favorable for the other two devices. Samsung now expects Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra to ship around 2 million to 2.5 million units, while Galaxy Z Flip 8 is projected at about 1.5 million to 1.9 million units.

In the earlier estimate, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8 were each placed at around 3 million units. The drop is especially noticeable for the clamshell model, which has traditionally been one of the more accessible styles in the foldable category.

Even with the cut, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra remains the model with the highest shipment target in the revised plan. But the gap is now narrower because the Wide model has been lifted so sharply.

Cost pressure is changing the approach

Industry component sources say the rise in memory and other parts costs is difficult to avoid passing on to consumers. That is creating pressure on the pricing of new foldables and making shipment forecasts more conservative.

The same sources also point to limited optimism for foldable sales this year, including for Samsung Electronics. In that environment, lowering the total target looks less like a minor adjustment and more like a response to a market that has become harder to read.

Samsung’s revised composition shows that it is not simply trimming expectations across the board. It is also choosing which models deserve more emphasis as it prepares the next wave of foldables.

A possible July 22 debut in London

All three devices are said to be possible candidates for introduction on July 22 at an event in London. If that schedule holds, attention is likely to focus not only on the lower shipment target, but also on the role Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) may play in Samsung’s next foldable push.

The model’s unusual shape and much higher target now place it at the center of the company’s updated plans, even as the broader foldable market faces a more cautious outlook.
