Six Gazan Detainees Released from Israeli Detention in Latest Prisoner Exchange

Six Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip were released from Israeli detention and transferred Sunday to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah for medical treatment. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated the transfer and helped reunite the detainees with their families, according to medical sources and the ICRC.

The six men arrived in the hospital after being held for months in Israeli prisons without minimum humanitarian standards. A medical source at the hospital confirmed their admission but did not provide details about their health conditions. Rights groups have reported that Israel detained these men during its military campaign on Gaza without clear legal procedures.

The ICRC emphasized its inability to access Palestinians currently held in Israeli detention since October. The organization reiterated that international humanitarian law requires detainees to be treated humanely, held in acceptable conditions, and allowed communication with their families. Many released detainees reportedly suffer from malnutrition and injuries caused by severe physical abuse during detention, as documented by former prisoners and human rights groups.

Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, Israel has sporadically released detainees from Gaza. On October 13, approximately 1,700 detainees were freed under a prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas, many arriving in poor health and describing torture, starvation, and humiliation during detention.

Currently, over 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, remain imprisoned in Israeli jails. Numerous reports by Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations detail abuse, medical neglect, and starvation faced by these detainees, which have resulted in multiple deaths. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with ongoing shortages of medical aid and a health emergency that continues to worsen despite the ceasefire.
