Dog biscuits sold in seven states have been recalled due to possible salmonella contamination, posing health risks to both pets and humans. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall after detecting salmonella in routine sampling of finished products.
Consumers Supply Distributing LLC, based in Sioux City, Iowa, initiated the recall on December 24 in cooperation with the FDA. The affected products include 4-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken.
These dog treats were distributed to retail stores across Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska. Pet owners in these states should carefully check their purchases for product identification details to avoid potential exposure.
Salmonella Risks for Pets and Humans
Salmonella bacteria can infect both animals and people. Pets consuming contaminated dog biscuits may experience symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Some infected pets might not show obvious symptoms but can still spread the bacteria to other animals and humans.
Humans handling the contaminated products can be exposed to salmonella, especially if proper handwashing is not practiced. Infections in people can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, and fever. Severe cases may lead to complications like infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract issues.
Experts advise consumers who develop symptoms after contact with recalled dog biscuits to seek medical care promptly. Similarly, pet owners noticing illness signs in animals that consumed the products should consult a veterinarian.
