Musetti Retires Injured, Djokovic Advances to Australian Open Semifinals After Grueling Quarterfinal

Novak Djokovic advanced to the Australian Open semifinals after Lorenzo Musetti retired from their quarterfinal match due to injury. Musetti, who led by two sets, was forced to stop playing because of a serious problem in his right leg.

Musetti took the first two sets 6-4, 6-3 and then suffered a leg injury early in the third set. Despite attempting to continue, he could not overcome the pain and retired while trailing 1-3. Djokovic expressed sympathy for Musetti, calling him the better player during the match.

Injury Details and Match Progress

Musetti needed medical treatment for his upper right leg after being broken in the third game of the third set. After struggling for nearly two games, he signaled his retirement by removing his headband and exchanging handshakes with Djokovic. Musetti described the injury as sudden and painful, saying, “I felt there was something strange in my right leg… the pain was increasing and the problem was not going away.”

Djokovic himself was not at his best, battling a serious blister on his right foot that required a medical timeout. The 38-year-old admitted he was lucky to remain in the match, stating, “I just wasn’t feeling the ball today due to his quality, and his variety in the game.”

Djokovic’s Road to the Semifinals

Djokovic’s path to the quarterfinals also featured fortunate breaks. He advanced to this stage after Jakub Mensik withdrew with an abdominal injury, giving Djokovic a walkover in the fourth round. This marks the second consecutive match where Djokovic progressed due to an opponent’s injury.

Despite his physical struggles, Djokovic is aiming for an 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th major. Next, he will face Jannik Sinner, the two-time defending Australian Open champion, who won his quarterfinal match against Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Historical and Contextual Insights

Musetti’s retirement adds to a troubling pattern; he also withdrew from last year’s French Open semifinals against Carlos Alcaraz due to a similar injury. Djokovic has experienced injury-related retirements from his side as well, including last year’s Australian Open semifinals when he quit with a torn leg muscle and faced boos from the crowd.

Both players’ careers highlight the physical toll of high-level tennis and the unpredictable nature of injuries during major tournaments. Djokovic emphasized the harsh reality of sports injuries, acknowledging how they changed the outcome, “We have done all exams and tests before the season to try and prevent these kind of injuries.”

Upcoming Semifinal Match

Djokovic will now meet Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Sinner is the two-time defending champion at the Australian Open and is coming off a solid 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal victory against the No. 8 seed Ben Shelton. This matchup sets the stage for a highly competitive semifinal as Djokovic seeks to continue his record-breaking major tally.
