Newly Released Epstein Files Reveal Detailed Ties and Private Exchanges with Noam Chomsky

Newly released documents from the US Justice Department provide fresh insights into the relationship between Noam Chomsky, the renowned linguist, and Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender. These records highlight a personal and financial connection that was previously undisclosed in detail, revealing ongoing correspondence and social interactions between the two men.

Chomsky’s exchanges with Epstein include moments of informal conversation and shared plans, such as vacation invitations and social dinners. In one instance, Chomsky expressed to Epstein a “fantasy” about visiting Epstein’s Caribbean island, a location well-known for its association with Epstein’s criminal activities. However, the documents do not suggest Chomsky was aware of or involved in any illegal actions on Epstein’s part.

Financial and Legal Interactions

The files confirm that Chomsky’s relationship with Epstein went beyond social pleasantries. Correspondence reveals Chomsky sought Epstein’s advice and assistance during a complex financial dispute involving real estate and inheritance issues with his children from a previous marriage. At one point, Chomsky’s estate attorney considered sending a firm email concerning a $187,000 payment discrepancy, and Epstein advised whether to proceed with the message.

Additionally, Valeria Chomsky, Noam’s wife and spokesperson, coordinated financial support connected to academic endeavors through Epstein’s associates. For example, a $20,000 check was arranged to help fund the administration of the “Chomsky challenge in linguistics.” These interactions indicate a pragmatic and ongoing financial dimension to their connection.

Social Circles and Invitations

Chomsky and Epstein’s social network overlapped significantly. The correspondence includes invitations to meet in New York and conversations about shared acquaintances. Epstein’s notes referenced plans involving “the Allens,” which likely pointed to filmmaker Woody Allen and his wife Soon-Yi Previn. These references align with parallel communications about gifting genetic testing kits to the Chomskys as well as to Allen and Previn, illustrating a wider social linkage among controversial figures.

In 2016, Epstein invited the Chomskys for a meal, highlighting a casual and seemingly convivial relationship. Chomsky’s emails to right-wing strategist Steve Bannon, facilitated by Epstein, suggest the linguist also sought connections to influential political figures, with “lots to talk about” according to his message.

Advice Amid Controversy

One of the most notable revelations is an exchange from early 2019 when Epstein conveyed to an associate that he had received public relations advice from Chomsky. This occurred eleven years after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor and shortly before Epstein’s death in federal custody on sex-trafficking charges.

The advice, attributed to Chomsky via a text sent by Epstein to an attorney and publicist, urged ignoring negative media coverage. Chomsky reportedly stated, “The best way to proceed is to ignore it,” citing a “hysteria that has developed about abuse of women.” He advised focusing responses only if explicitly questioned, describing the public outrage as excessive and temporary.

Neither Noam Chomsky nor Valeria Chomsky has publicly confirmed or denied the authenticity of the 2019 advice attributed to him. Their silence adds complexity to public understanding of the relationship and the scholar’s stance on Epstein’s legal troubles and societal backlash.

Context of the Records Release

The newly disclosed emails and messages come in response to a congressional transparency law mandating the release of extensive documents about Epstein’s extensive network and criminal cases. These files build upon previous releases and investigations, including disclosures made by US House Democrats that partly illuminated Chomsky’s “regular contact” with Epstein.

The public scrutiny intensified as former President Donald Trump promised the release of Epstein’s client list during his 2024 presidential campaign. However, after his inauguration, the Justice Department maintained there is no such list. Bipartisan pressure led to continued disclosures, including the tranche that revealed detailed correspondence involving Chomsky.

Profile of Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky, 97 years old, remains one of the most influential intellectuals, holding the title of professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had been a laureate linguistics professor at the University of Arizona but has been on unpaid medical leave since late 2023. While his contributions to linguistics and political thought are widely respected, these revelations about his ties to Epstein provide new layers for public consideration and debate about his personal associations.

This developing story continues to evolve as more documents become available, shaping understanding of the complex relationships surrounding Epstein and the influential figures connected to him.
