The Milwaukee Brewers second baseman expressed his excitement upon receiving the call, saying, “When I got the call, I was so excited.” Even though he was officially named to the roster in early December, Turang admitted the reality of the honor has not fully set in yet.
Turang’s connection with Team USA began in a group chat with fellow players, where he has engaged in early team communications. He recalled his initial awareness of the World Baseball Classic emerging during the 2017 tournament, when over 51,000 fans witnessed Team USA’s dominant 8-0 win in the championship game at Dodger Stadium. “That’s about when I started paying attention… It’s really cool. It’s very competitive, for sure,” Turang reflected.
A Baseball Lineage and Early Promise
At 26 years old, Turang comes from a strong baseball background. His father, Brian Turang, played in Major League Baseball with the Seattle Mariners in the early ’90s, while his mother competed in the Women’s College World Series as a collegiate softball player. Turang’s own competitive spirit was evident from a young age, earning a silver medal with Team USA at the World Cup at 15 and a gold medal two years later. Drafted straight out of high school, he made his MLB debut by age 23 and quickly became Milwaukee’s starting second baseman.
Despite a modest stature of 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Turang is a versatile player who excels both offensively and defensively. In the previous MLB season, he posted a .288 batting average with an OPS of .794, hitting 18 home runs and stealing 24 bases. His defensive prowess was acknowledged with the National League Gold Glove Award, underscoring his importance to the Brewers during their postseason campaign.

Turang views representing the United States at the Classic as a tremendous honor. “It means a lot to represent your country that you love and care about, and you want to win for your country,” he stated. He looks forward to learning from his teammates’ approaches to preparation and gameplay, intending to incorporate any useful observations into his own style. “I just want to pick everyone’s brain a little bit… It’s about watching how they prepare, what they do defensively and offensively,” Turang explained.

Fourteen Brewers players, including Turang, will participate in the World Baseball Classic, representing nine different nations. Despite several players departing the club to join their national teams, Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed confidence in his team’s resilience. He said, “I trust our players’ ability. They’ll represent their countries, handle that responsibility, and come back.”
Murphy highlighted how the experience in the Classic offers developmental benefits beyond the regular season. He pointed out that the short tournament format cultivates urgency and competitive intensity similar to postseason baseball. “It’s a learning experience in itself… Experiencing a short tournament prepares you for the postseason, where mistakes are magnified,” Murphy added.

Although excited and honored, Turang remains grounded in his game approach. He intends to adapt to team needs without overextending himself. “I’m just going to do whatever the situation calls for, whatever the team needs,” he said. He aims to maintain his consistent style of hard play, allowing his teammates to contribute in their own ways.
