Gunnar Henderson delivered an outstanding performance for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, collecting four hits in five at-bats during the 9-1 victory over Great Britain. Playing at shortstop, Henderson contributed two RBIs with a key single in a five-run fifth inning, helping the United States improve to 2-0 in the tournament.
The Baltimore Orioles organization has taken notice of Henderson’s impact on the international stage. Jordan Westburg, a fellow Orioles infielder and longtime teammate, praised Henderson’s competitive nature and relentless drive to win. Westburg shared on social media his admiration for Henderson’s performance, stating, “Keep that man in the lineup.”
Westburg also highlighted Henderson’s passion and intensity, noting, “He’s the most competitive person at anything that he does.” According to Westburg, Henderson approached the game with a chip on his shoulder after missing the previous match, fueling his exceptional performance.
Henderson, at 24 years old, is already recognized as one of Major League Baseball’s top emerging stars. His most prolific season came recently when he posted a .281 batting average with 37 home runs, 92 RBIs, and an .893 OPS in 159 games. This earned him an All-Star selection and a fourth-place finish in American League MVP voting.
Even in a less dominant follow-up season, Henderson maintained solid stats with a .274 average, 17 home runs, and 68 RBIs in 154 games. These consistent results made him an automatic choice for the USA’s WBC roster.
Adley Rutschman, a catcher for the Orioles, commended Henderson’s elite skills and was not surprised by the four-hit game. Rutschman emphasized that Henderson’s passion for the game and representing his country is evident on and off the field.
Before departing for the WBC, Henderson expressed excitement about his first participation in the tournament, though his typically reserved demeanor didn’t fully reveal his enthusiasm. Teammates like outfielder Colton Cowser recognized the significance of the experience for Henderson beyond his brief responses.
Rutschman remarked on Henderson’s blend of excitement and anticipation, saying, “I know he’s definitely excited.” Westburg added that representing the United States means a great deal to Henderson, who “loves representing something bigger than himself.”
Henderson’s emotional intensity was visible during the game, particularly when he flexed and yelled toward the dugout after reaching second base on a two-run single and subsequent error. Rutschman called this moment “one of my favorite things about him” and admired his passion for the WBC.
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz, new to the club this season, is already impressed by Henderson’s gritty style and ability to perform under pressure. Albernaz described watching Henderson’s performance as “so cool” and praised how such competitive environments elevate players like Henderson.
Albernaz admitted that the excitement from Henderson’s showing kept him awake, but the team’s delayed report time allowed for much-needed rest. The manager looks forward to seeing Henderson continue to thrive both internationally and at Orioles camp.
Baltimore fans eagerly anticipate that Henderson’s WBC success will translate into another strong MLB season. The shortstop’s blend of skill, passion, and leadership makes him a cornerstone for the Orioles’ future and a player to watch as the season unfolds.
