Rahane Under Fire At KKR, Srikkanth Says He Blocks The Top Order

Kolkata Knight Riders enter their opening clash against Mumbai Indians with a selection question that has drawn early attention, as Ajinkya Rahane’s role at the top of the order comes under scrutiny. Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has argued that Rahane may create a batting squeeze for KKR, saying the veteran batter “can neither smash the bowling nor anchor the innings” in the way a top-order specialist should.

Rahane is set to lead KKR for a second straight season after finishing last year as the team’s highest run-scorer, even though the franchise ended up eighth in the standings. KKR have strengthened their squad this time, but the captain’s place in the XI has sparked debate because the team also has two in-form openers, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert.

Srikkanth’s concern over the batting balance

Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel that Rahane could occupy a crucial slot without offering enough impact as an opener. He suggested that the captain is likely to play because of his leadership role, not purely because of batting value.

“He is playing because he’s the captain,” Srikkanth said, adding that Rahane “is going to block that slot” if he opens the innings. He also pointed to the challenge of fitting a player into the top order if that batter does not provide either high tempo or long, stabilising innings.

Why the debate has surfaced

The issue is not only about Rahane’s past record but also about KKR’s current squad structure. If Rahane opens, one of Allen or Seifert may have to miss out, which could reduce the side’s flexibility and attacking options at the top.

That is why the discussion has moved beyond individual form and into team balance. In T20 cricket, a top-order batter must either attack early or absorb pressure through long innings, and Srikkanth believes Rahane has not consistently done either in recent seasons.

What Rahane has offered KKR

Rahane’s selection is linked closely to his leadership and experience. He was KKR’s highest scorer last season, which showed that he can still contribute runs, but the wider concern is whether that output is enough to justify a fixed opening role when stronger specialists are available.

Srikkanth acknowledged Rahane’s strong IPL 2023 campaign with Chennai Super Kings, when his aggressive batting helped that side win the title. He said, however, that the last two seasons have not produced a similar level of impact, which is why he sees KKR as being “stuck” in terms of role definition.

KKR’s opening options and selection challenge

  1. Ajinkya Rahane: captain and likely automatic pick
  2. Finn Allen: aggressive top-order option
  3. Tim Seifert: another in-form opener with power-play value
  4. Middle order: could be affected if the top order is overcrowded

This creates a difficult call for KKR before a high-profile match at the Wankhede Stadium. A team that wants more firepower at the top must still decide whether the stability and leadership Rahane provides outweigh the upside of picking both specialist openers.

The pressure ahead of the Mumbai Indians clash

KKR will want a strong start in this campaign after finishing well below expectations last time. The first game often sets the tone for a season, and the spotlight on Rahane means every batting decision will be assessed closely.

Rahane, meanwhile, faces the familiar challenge of proving that his role is not just symbolic. If KKR’s balance is to work, his contribution will need to satisfy both the demands of captaincy and the scoring rate required in modern T20 cricket, especially with other top-order options waiting for a place in the side.
