Two people were killed after a motorcycle and an SUV collided at the intersection of Imperial Parkway and East Terry Street in Bonita Springs on Saturday night. The crash involved an 18-year-old motorcyclist from Fort Myers and a 55-year-old woman from Bonita Springs, who was riding as a passenger in the SUV.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling northbound in the inside lane of Imperial Parkway at a high rate of speed as it approached the intersection. At the same time, a 65-year-old Bonita Springs man was driving the SUV in the left-turn lane of southbound Imperial Parkway.
Crash happened with a green signal
Investigators said both vehicles were facing a solid green traffic control signal when the SUV driver turned left into the motorcycle’s path. The front of the motorcycle struck the front-right side of the SUV, and the motorcyclist became lodged on the SUV’s front-right passenger side.
The motorcyclist and the SUV passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center for treatment.
Investigation remains active
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. Authorities have not released additional details about whether speed, visibility, or other factors may have contributed beyond the information already provided in the initial report.
The deadly collision has drawn renewed attention to the dangers at busy intersections, especially when vehicles from opposite directions move through the same junction at the same time. Imperial Parkway and East Terry Street became the focus of the investigation after the nighttime crash left two people dead and one driver injured.
