Sony Raises PlayStation Plus Prices Again, Just Months Before GTA 6 Online Rush

Sony has announced higher PlayStation Plus prices for new subscribers in select regions, with the change set to begin on May 20. The company said the increase is tied to “ongoing market conditions,” and it affects the monthly and three-month subscription tiers.

PlayStation Plus is Sony’s paid service for PS4 and PS5 owners. It includes online multiplayer access, monthly downloadable games, and store discounts, which makes the price change relevant to anyone planning to use PlayStation’s online features.

What the new PlayStation Plus prices are

Sony said the 1-month plan will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP. The 3-month plan will rise to $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP.

That means the monthly subscription goes up by $1, while the three-month option increases by $3. Sony said the new prices apply to new customers in select regions, not to existing subscribers in most cases.

Who is affected by the price hike

Current subscribers will not be affected right away unless their subscription changes or lapses. Sony added an exception for Turkey and India, where the price change does apply to current subscribers.

That detail matters because it limits the immediate impact for many existing users. New customers, however, will face the higher entry cost as soon as the change takes effect.

Why Sony says prices are going up

Sony blamed “ongoing market conditions” in its announcement. The move arrives during a wider stretch of price increases across the video game industry, especially in hardware and subscription services.

Sony has already raised PS5 console prices in the past, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The new PlayStation Plus increase now adds another cost for players who rely on Sony’s online ecosystem.

Player reaction has been negative

The announcement has already drawn criticism from PlayStation fans online. Some argued that online gaming should not require a paid subscription, while others said the new rates make PlayStation gaming even more expensive.

Others pointed to Microsoft’s recent Xbox Game Pass price cut and questioned Sony’s explanation for the increase. That contrast has made the timing of the announcement stand out even more to users comparing subscription value across platforms.

Why the timing is being watched closely

The price hike also comes before the planned release of GTA 6, which is expected to bring many new players into the current console generation. An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required for GTA Online, and there is no indication that will change when GTA 6 arrives.

That has led to speculation that Sony may benefit from a larger wave of new subscribers who want online access for the game. Whether that proves true or not, the timing gives the price increase added significance for PlayStation users who plan to stay active online.

Sony also said its gaming business is expected to see annual sales fall 6% to 4.42 trillion yen, or about $28 billion, due to weaker hardware sales. Even so, the company expects gaming profit to rise 30% thanks to stronger first-party software sales and the absence of a large impairment loss tied to Bungie.
