Google Confirms Gmail Flickering Bug On Samsung Foldables, Temporary Fixes Are Available

Some Gmail users on Samsung devices are running into a frustrating display bug that makes email text flicker and then disappear from the screen. Google is already aware of the issue and is preparing a temporary fix while the broader problem remains unresolved.

The bug does not appear to affect everyone, but the reports share a similar pattern. Several complaints point to Samsung tablets and large-screen foldable phones, which suggests the problem may be tied to how Gmail renders content on certain devices rather than to a user’s account.

What users are seeing

The most common complaint is simple but disruptive: an email opens, the body text flashes, and then the content vanishes. Gmail itself still launches normally, yet the message body becomes unstable enough that reading the email turns into a struggle.

In some cases, the same message appears normally on a phone but not on a Samsung tablet. That difference has helped narrow the issue toward the device side, rather than the mail account or inbox contents.

There are also reports involving the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, adding more weight to the idea that the bug is linked to Samsung devices with larger displays. So far, the pattern does not point to all Android phones in general.

Temporary fixes that have worked for some users

One of the quickest workarounds is to turn on Auto-rotate and then switch the device back and forth between portrait and landscape. Some users say this makes the email body appear normally again, at least for the moment.

Another reported workaround is more technical. Clearing the cache for Android System WebView and removing its updates has also been said to resolve the display problem, at least until the component is updated again.

That makes sense because Android System WebView is often used to show web-based content inside Android apps. If that component misbehaves, it can affect how content appears inside Gmail on certain devices.

Google is preparing an official fix

Google is already aware of the bug and is working on a more permanent solution. That matters because the issue can return even after a workaround seems to work once.

No timeline for the official fix has been shared. For now, Samsung tablet users and owners of Samsung foldable phones who see Gmail content disappear may need to rely on the temporary steps above when the problem appears.

For users who have not experienced the bug, the case is a reminder that Gmail issues are not always caused by the network or the account itself. Sometimes the problem sits with a specific device setup or a system component that handles how content is displayed.
