Motorola has addressed the unusual route that some Moto phone users saw when opening Amazon Shopping, and the company says the behavior was not intentional. The issue briefly raised questions about privacy and how app links were being handled on its devices.
The company said the problem has now been fixed, and installed apps should open directly again without first passing through a web tracking link. That clarification matters because the incident affected only some users in the United States, yet it touched a sensitive area where user trust, app routing, and transparency all overlap.
Motorola told 9to5Google that the app search and suggestion experience in the Moto App Launcher was built together with Device Native to help users find and launch installed apps more quickly. The Amazon case drew attention because the path to the shopping app was reported to pass through a route connected with that ad-tech partner.
Motorola did not provide a technical breakdown of what went wrong. Instead, it said the routing mistake has been corrected and that the system will continue to be monitored so the expected behavior remains intact across devices.
The company’s response is important because it pushes back on the idea that the detour was a deliberate design choice. According to Motorola, the incident came from a configuration error in routing, not from an intended feature meant to send users through an extra step.
For users, the problem was more than a brief browser flash. An installed app opening in an indirect way can create confusion, especially when the path includes a tracking link that was not expected by the user.
That is also why the case quickly became tied to broader questions about affiliate monetization and privacy. Motorola did not say the routing was intentional, but the incident still underscored how sensitive third-party app paths can become when tracking and transparency are involved.
Motorola said it takes user experience, privacy, and platform integrity seriously. The company also said it will keep monitoring the system closely and maintain responsible, transparent engagement with researchers so potential issues can be identified and addressed quickly.
For now, the company’s position is straightforward: installed apps, including Amazon Shopping, are meant to open directly again without any web tracking detour.
