Microsoft’s New Surface Laptop Ultra Hints At A Magnetic USB-C Surprise

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is drawing attention for a detail that sits far beyond the new Nvidia RTX Spark platform inside it. A USB-C port on the right side of the device appears physically different from the other ports, and that unusual design choice has fueled speculation that Microsoft is preparing something more advanced than a standard charging connector.

The difference is visible in both hands-on observations and official materials. Tech reporter Zac Bowden noted that the right-side port looks larger than the USB-C ports on the left, and Microsoft has already confirmed that the asymmetry is intentional.

A port design that is meant to stand out

The oversized port has become one of the most discussed parts of the Surface Laptop Ultra. Its shape does not appear to be a simple cosmetic variation, since the hardware and port layout are described as final, with Microsoft saying there is a specific reason behind the design.

That explanation has not been made public yet. Microsoft has said only that the full details will be revealed later this year, leaving the port’s actual role open to interpretation.

Why the unusual connector matters

One of the strongest theories is that Microsoft may be preparing a magnetic connection with a breakaway mechanism. Bowden reported that the cable feels looser in that port, which has led observers to think the company could be testing a magnetic USB-C cable that disconnects more safely if pulled.

Another possibility is a special adapter that fits into the oversized opening. In that scenario, the port could serve as a bridge to a new version of the magnetic Surface Connect style connector used on earlier Surface laptops.

Not a typical USB-C charging setup

The right-side port also seems to differ from the USB-C charging implementations seen on other notebooks with high-power platforms. The report highlights that other laptops based on RTX Spark do not alter their USB-C ports just for charging purposes.

That is part of why the Surface Laptop Ultra stands out. Microsoft appears to be taking a more customized approach to the physical design of the device, rather than following the standard layout used elsewhere in the category.

What comes next for Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft plans to reveal more about the Surface Laptop Ultra this fall. Until then, the unusual USB-C port remains one of the biggest unanswered questions around the new Surface machine.

If the port does turn out to support magnetic breakaway charging, the laptop could offer a safer power connection for professional users. It would also place Surface Laptop Ultra in direct competition with Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro, which already includes MagSafe as an extra charging feature.
