Steam’s latest discount has put Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition back in the spotlight, and the timing is hard to ignore for strategy fans. The game is currently 65% off, bringing it to about $14 instead of its usual $40.
That price also matches its previous lowest level, which was last seen in December 2025. With ongoing content support still in place, the deal stands out as more than a routine storefront promotion.
A long-running RTS name still carries weight
Age of Empires remains one of the defining names in real-time strategy, alongside Warcraft, StarCraft, and Command & Conquer. The series first arrived on PC in 1997, and Age of Empires IV followed in October 2021.
Since launch, the game has continued to receive regular updates and new content. Its latest expansion, Yue Fei’s Legacy, arrived in May 2026 and added the Jin Dynasty as a new civilization, along with a new campaign.
Classic strategy formula, modern scope

Substantial content, but the full package costs more
PC Games pointed to the game’s variety as one of its strongest qualities. The base version includes eight civilizations, each with its own mechanics and play style.
The amount of content is also significant from the start. Four major campaigns provide around 30 to 40 hours of gameplay before any DLC is added.
Even so, the complete version remains expensive. The current discount only applies to the Anniversary Edition, while the full bundle with all DLC still costs much more.
A strong reception despite a few criticisms
PC Games gave Age of Empires IV a score of 8 out of 10. Its main criticisms included a lack of truly original ideas, some technical issues, and visuals that no longer feel especially cutting-edge by 2021 standards.
Player response has remained strong. The game has nearly 93,000 Steam user reviews, with 85% marked positive.
It is also listed as “Playable” on Steam Deck. Although RTS games usually work best with a mouse and keyboard, Valve’s trackpads make the handheld experience more manageable than expected.
For players waiting for a meaningful entry point, this 65% discount puts Age of Empires IV back at its lowest price and makes the offer difficult to overlook. With active content support and a healthy community still behind it, the game remains one of Steam’s more notable strategy deals right now.
